Sports betting is actually legal in Missouri right now, but nothing will go live until December 1 2025. In November 2024, voters successfully passed the Amendment 2 legislation paving the way for legal sports betting in the Show Me State.
Sports betting will be overseen by the Missouri Gaming Commission, who were initially hoping to launch the state's licensed sportsbooks as soon as this summer. However, such moves were held up by various legal mechanisms and now the soonest you'll be able to bet on sports in MO will be this December.
Now that we know that sports betting is legal, it’s a question of which online sportsbooks are going to launch in Missouri. At the moment, there is the potential for up to 21 sportsbooks to launch in the Show Me State, and here are some of the most likely candidates:
So once sports betting actually goes live in Missouri, you should be able to bet on an entire world of sports. This is because all good online sportsbooks will feature odds for well over thirty sports that take in everything from football, hockey, basketball and baseball through to even the most niche of sports. While all of that is good, you are probably most likely to be betting on one of the following sports:
Chances are that most people will take at least the occasional bet on Kansas City Chiefs. Whether Patrick Mahomes can lift his team to yet another Super Bowl triumph remains to be seen, but it’s going to be a lot of fun betting on the action.
It’s fair to say that baseball is massive in Missouri thanks to the exploits of the Kansas City Royals and St Louis Cardinals. The good news is that you’ll be able to legally bet on both teams and all other MLB franchises from December onwards.
Hockey fans can rejoice as December 2025 will be the month when you can finally bet on the St Louis Blues in the NHL. Whether they can repeat that Stanley Cup triumph of 2019 remains to be seen.
OK, so NBA teams don’t tend to last too long in Missouri, but there should be little stopping you from betting on pretty much any basketball team once December rolls around.
This is one of the handful of areas where the legal situation isn’t totally clear. Most states with legal sports betting will let you bet on college sports, although there might be restrictions about betting on in-state teams or even specific kinds of bets such as player props. As such, it remains to be seen whether you’ll be able to bet on popular local college sports teams like the University of Missouri in Columbia. However, we’ll update this guide as and when we get the relevant information.
So while we wait for sports betting to go live in MO, it’s worth having a quick look over your main options for actually betting on sports at the moment. Here’s what you can do:
There’s nothing stopping you from driving over the border to bet on sports at one of several neighboring states which have legalized sports betting. These include Kansas, Kentucky, Iowa, Illinois, Tennessee, and Arkansas.
There are plenty of social sportsbooks that accept customers from Missouri. Just note that there is no actual real money betting at social sportsbooks, as you will be placing social bets with virtual currencies instead.
OK, this is a pretty unique situation. Missouri actually legalized betting at racetracks back in 1984, but there aren’t any racetracks located within the state. So while it’s legal, it’s not actually possible.
This is the closest thing that you’ll get to regular sports betting in Missouri at the moment. DFS sites are already allowed to operate in the Show Me State. Despite this, it’s worth noting that these sites can only offer you peer-to-peer contests, rather than house-vs-player DFS contests.
Part of the Missouri Gaming Commission’s job is to ensure that you get all of the help you need to keep your sports bets under control. This means that all licensed online sportsbooks in MO are going to have the following player protection tools:
| Responsible Gambling Tool | How It Works |
|---|---|
| Limits | Apply limits to how much you deposit, bet, lose and even how long you spend betting |
| Cooling-off | Take a time-out to get a little perspective on your betting |
| Self-exclusion | Permanently ban yourself from that sports betting site |
Betting on sports is risky by nature as you will be using your own money to place bets on the action. As such, you should take a variety of steps to ensure that you stay safe. Here are just a few things to keep in mind:
It’s essential that you only use those sportsbooks that are fully licensed by the Missouri Gaming Commission. Failure to have this kind of licensing would mean that the sportsbook is acting illegally and you would get nothing in terms of customer protection. So just because a betting site says that it accepted customers from Missouri doesn’t necessarily mean that it is legally allowed to do so.
It’s also smart to check that any online sportsbook you are thinking of using is actually capable of safeguarding your data and deposits. This is why all of our recommended sportsbooks have SSL-level encryption along with a valid privacy policy.
All legit online sportsbooks in Missouri will be checking that only those of legal age get to use their sports betting services. As such, you’ll usually be expected to verify your identity by providing some government-issued photo ID such as your passport or driver’s license upon signing up.
It’s one thing to know the sports betting law in Missouri, and quite something else to actually place your bets. So here is a quick rundown of what you need to do:
Most sports fans would agree that the arrival of legal sports betting in Missouri can only be a good thing. Still, it’s important to have a balanced view of what’s going to happen, and so here are the main pros and cons to consider:
We’ve shown you that you only have a few months to wait before MO sports betting goes live. So once December rolls around, you’ll get a legal, safe and fun way to bet on the Chiefs, the Cardinals, the Royals, the Blues or any other team you support.
We’ll be updating this guide to take account of any changes in the state’s regulation for things like college sports betting. So make sure that you check back to this guide to see what the Missouri sports betting laws are right now.
You will need to be at least 21 years old to bet on sports in Missouri. Expect to have to verify your identity upon signing up to any online sportsbooks in the Show Me State.
Not yet, but you will do from December 1 2025 onwards. Perfect for getting a legal way to bet on the business end of the NFL season.
At the moment, you can only use the DraftKings fantasy sports site in Missouri. However, from December 1 2025, there will be a good chance that you’ll be able to use the brand’s online sportsbook in the Show Me State too.
You should be able to download legal online sportsbook apps in Missouri from the relevant Apple App Store or Google Play. Just remember that you won’t be able to actually bet via these apps until December 1 2025.
If you are referring to Amendment 2, then it narrowly passed the public vote in November 2024. As such, sports betting is now legal in Missouri, although it’ll take a few more months to actually come into effect.
