Weather conditions significantly influence ball flight and, in turn, player performance. For ball flight, warmer temperatures and humid air favor better hits. As a result, you can expect more home runs and higher scoring, as the ball travels faster in less dense air.
Researching for pitchers
Pitchers in MLB DFS are a reliable source of scoring and production in the game. That is because they accumulate fantasy points via more categories than any other player. As such, they form the foundation of any robust MLB daily fantasy sports lineup.
While pitchers have considerable control over their velocity, movement, and break, you have to consider both internal and external factors during your roster construction. The external factors include run support from the team’s offense and the team’s defense. These factors will affect your pitcher’s stats. Hence, I recommend evaluating how much run support a pitcher receives before adding the pitcher to your lineup.
You must also consider the pitcher’s historical performance, particularly his strikeout rate. The strikeout rate should be high—K/9 and K%. You can also consider crucial factors like
- The xFIP (field independent pitching)
- The Skill-interactive Earned Run Average (SIERA)
- The Swinging Strike Percentage (SwStr%)
I recommend making a thorough opponent analysis as well. For this analysis, target opposing teams with high strikeout rates, low team totals, and struggling offenses.
As a final consideration when selecting pitchers, you’ll have to look at the ballpark conditions. Stadium dimensions may make the location pitcher-friendly or hitter-friendly. You can also review the pitcher’s past performances in the ballparks.
Researching for hitters
The weighted on-base average is a valuable metric for assessing a hitter’s overall performance at the plate and the hitter’s value to the team’s offense. Another approach you can consider when picking your hitters is to choose them based on the pitchers from opposing teams. A batter vs. pitcher metric is the most notable metric to consider in this regard.
You can also evaluate how likely the opposing pitcher allow fly balls or how likely he is to induce grounders. However, this consideration must be done in light of others.
Ballpark factors like launchpads and blackholes are also crucial in roster construction. Like your pitchers, you have to evaluate if the ballpark favors hitters or pitchers. If you use Vegas implied run totals, then I recommend picking hitters from teams with high implied run totals.
Construct your roster
Begin by adding pitchers to your lineup. Then, stack your hitters, especially if you opt for guaranteed prize pools.
Stacking in MLB daily fantasy sports involves choosing multiple players from the same team. This approach increases your chances of scoring as many points as possible if the team has a big offensive day. Prominent stacks include the following:
- 5-2-1 (five players from one team, two from another, and one one-off)
- 4-4 or 4-3-1 (for this stack, you will have a maximum of four players from one team)
The next step after stacking is to fill the remaining spots with high-upside one-off hitters. These players should also excel in impressive individual matchups or strong batting spots.
Ensure you stay under your salary. Note that you may have to consider cheaper “value” plays to afford expensive stars that will give you fantasy points.
Before you finalize your lineup, ensure you do the following:
- Confirm that your players will start the game. That might mean checking a few hours before the game begins, as lineups are typically released between 2 and 3 hours before game time.
- Check for injuries, days off, or sidelines.
- Consider the weather as well. A rained-out game means zero points for the day. As such, you have to check weather forecasts for rain reports.
