What is NFL daily fantasy sports?
NFL daily fantasy sports is a skill-based game where you attempt to build the strongest NFL team and compete for real cash prizes. Game outcomes are based on results from real NFL games, which are played on the same day or within the same week.
How does NFL DFS differ from season-long fantasy football?
The beauty of DFS NFL games is that results are reset much more frequently than the standard, season-long version of fantasy football that you may be accustomed to. That means you’re not tied into the event for an entire season, but can more readily pick and choose when you want to play. It also means that potential win payouts are much more frequent, with outcomes settled based on individual scores rather than a team’s season-long performance.
Why is NFL DFS so popular in the USA?
To answer that, it’s worth taking a look at the key pros and cons of NFL DFS, which should tell you all you need to know about why it’s so popular (along with one of its key downsides).
Is NFL DFS betting legal in the USA?
Technically speaking, daily fantasy sports betting on the NFL is legal at a federal level across the USA. However, it’s up to individual states to decide how it’s regulated and licensed, along with the different DFS sites permitted to operate within particular states.
Since DFS betting is a little different from regular sports betting, its legal status isn’t as cut and dried. What I mean by that is, there are three, as opposed to two, legal categories that DFS falls into, including:
- Fully licensed and regulated: NFL DFS betting is fully licensed and regulated in some states, including Indiana, Michigan, Louisiana, and several other jurisdictions. Here, lawmakers grant gaming licenses to specific DFS sites, just as they would with a regular sports betting vendor.
- Not licensed but permitted by omission: In some states, like Georgia, Florida, and Texas, DFS sites aren’t technically regulated, but only because they’re not mentioned in a state’s broader sports betting legislation. Here, it’s assumed that NFL DFS betting is permitted, since other forms of sports betting have been legalized, so brands like Underdog have set up shop.
- Restricted and prohibited: Some states prohibit the use of NFL DFS sites, along with restricting the use of sports gambling sites in general. At the time of writing, this is true of jurisdictions like Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Hawaii, though it is worth noting that laws are subject to frequent changes.
Five of the best NFL DFS sites to try in the US
Now you’re clued in on the ins, outs, and legal status of NFL daily fantasy sports, let me introduce some of my favorite brands where you can tap into DFS gameplay. Remember, not all these sites may be available where you live, so check the small print carefully to make sure they’re available in your state before you attempt to sign up and play.
Underdog – A flexible platform for exciting NFL DFS play
Underdog has risen to become a go-to platform for DFS play, and judging by its NFL offering alone, it’s easy to see why. Available in 40+ states across the US, Underdog has diluted its DFS system into individual formats, including “Pick’Em”, “Rivals”, “Snake Drafts”, and “Best Ball”, which ultimately improves flexibility and gives players more options based on how they like to play.
My favorite Underdog NFL DFS game format proved to be “Rivals”, which allows you to enter head-to-head confrontations with fellow gamers. There are five picks per entry here, with the objective being to build the strongest side within the salary limit. Great fun!
Betr – Mobile-centric gameplay helps set Betr apart
Betr has certainly got the measure of its audience’s gameplay preferences, opting for a mobile-first DFS platform that looks and performs exceptionally well in the brand’s iOS and Android mobile apps. This, coupled with Betr’s regular collabs with high-profile US sports influencers, suggests that the brand knows exactly who it’s looking to target with its flexible NFL DFS gameplay system.
From a performance perspective, Betr’s streamlined “pick’em” style DFS platform is sure to appeal to casual players. Locking in picks is super easy and quick here, with “more or less” parameters in place to keep things flowing. There’s some big payout potential too, although it is worth noting that Betr may not be the best choice for desktop gamers.
ParlayPlay – A beginner-friendly DFS portal with payout multipliers up to 155x
ParlayPlay has come through with a solid NFL DFS offering, with players able to combine 2-9 picks in a single entry. The prize multipliers of up to 155x certainly caught my attention here, particularly when you consider how easy and straightforward the site is to use.
Like Betr, ParlayPlay has opted for a mobile-first gaming experience, so the site works best in its mobile app format, although you can use it in mobile browsers like Safari and Chrome too. Alongside its flagship pick’em offering, there are unique games like “Hit It” alongside live contests, both of which require a little more strategy and research to master (but are well worth trying out if you’re a self-confessed NFL nut).
OwnersBox – Three main NFL DFS contest types to choose from
I’m a big fan of OwnersBox, primarily because it offers its NFL DFS games across three primary formats. First, there’s Player Picks, which is the standard pick’em-style system found at comparable DFS sites. Alongside this is “Salary Cap”, which requires you to build a winning team under $50,000 – an exciting way to play.
The final game mode available at OwnersBox is “Lightning Lineups”, wherein you must make picks from preset trios of players in an attempt to score the most points; it’s a creative format that’s super beginner-friendly. What’s also worth noting is that OwnersBox is available in around 30 US states at the time of writing.
Dabble – A community-driven DFS site for true NFL fans
Dabble isn’t the best nor the most widely available NFL DFS site on my shortlist (it’s currently only available in around 20 US states), but it makes up for that with its in-built community forums, aptly-named the “Banter” portal. The inclusion of this chat facility serves to amp up the competitiveness of the brand’s DFS offerings, while giving players the opportunity to chat to their rivals and gaming buddies.
Elsewhere, I appreciate Dabble’s flexible picking ranges, which vary from 2-12 selections. The more picks you make, the higher the multiplier will climb, with an eye-catching 1,000x prize multiplier available for the perfect 12-leg selection. There are two entry systems available here, including “All In” and “Hedge”. The difference between them should speak for itself, with “All In” meaning you’ll need to win all your picks, and “Hedge” allowing for some incorrect selections.

Now that you’ve chosen your perfect NFL DFS site, here are some expert insider tips to kick things off and set you on the road to NFL pick’em success.
