Why Join Multiple Sportsbooks?Understanding NBA Odds and Betting Lines
The first and last thing to know about basketball betting is that NBA odds (often called Vegas odds) are prices, not probabilities. Sportsbooks take bets on both sides of a matchup. Favorites pay less, while underdogs pay more. If you back the team expected to win, you’ll need to risk a little extra to make it worthwhile. On the other hand, betting on the underdog offers a bigger potential reward.
On this page, we list all the different “prices” that the top sportsbooks are offering for the major betting markets, so you can shop around for the best lines. Essentially, you’re not locked into one sportsbook; you choose where you place your bet.
To help you spot the best-priced odds, Dimers presents NBA odds tonight in two formats.
American Odds: The standard format used by U.S. sportsbooks. American odds show how much you need to bet to win $100 on a favorite or how much profit you’d make from a $100 bet on an underdog. A minus sign (-) indicates a favorite; a plus sign (+) indicates an underdog. For example, if the Boston Celtics are -155 and the Miami Heat are +125, a $155 bet on Boston would return $100 profit (plus your stake), while a $100 bet on Miami would return $125 profit (plus your stake again) if they win.
Decimal Odds: Popular in Canada and internationally, decimal odds show the total payout (profit plus stake) for every $1 wagered. If the Celtics are 1.64, you’d earn $0.64 profit per dollar staked. If the Heat is 2.25, you’ll get your original $1 back plus $1.25 profit. To estimate your potential return, simply multiply your bet amount by the decimal price.
Remember, sportsbooks include a small commission in their lines to ensure they make money, win or lose. This is known as “the vig” (short for vigorish) or “the juice.”

How to Bet NBA Game Odds, Lines, and Spreads
Compare Moneyline Prices: Even small differences in NBA moneyline odds can add up over a long NBA season. For example, if the Boston Celtics are -150 at one sportsbook but -135 at another, that’s an extra $15 for every $100 bet—small savings that stack up across dozens of games.
Spot Spread Variations: NBA point spread odds can differ slightly between books. One site might list the Lakers -6.5 at -110, while another offers -6.5 at -105. Over the course of the season, consistently finding these small value gaps can make a noticeable impact on your ROI.
Shop for the Best Total: The total points (over/under) line is crucial for NBA betting. A total of 221.5 vs. 222.5 could mean the difference between a win and a loss. Comparing totals across sportsbooks helps you lock in the best edge before placing your wager.

Popular NBA Odds Markets (Moneyline, Spread, Totals)
Most sportsbooks cover the following three major NBA betting markets:
Moneyline (H2H odds): Betting on the outright winner of the game. Moneyline odds list the price for the favorite and the underdog.
Spread (NBA point spread): A handicap applied to level the playing field between teams. The favorite must win by more than the listed points, while the underdog can either win outright or lose by fewer points to “cover the spread.” For example, if the Celtics are -6.5 favorites against the Heat (+6.5), Boston must win by seven or more points for the bet to cash. If Miami loses by 6 or fewer (or wins), the bet on the Heat wins.
Total Points (over/under): A wager on the combined score of both teams. If the total is set at 221.5, betting the “over” means you expect 222 or more total points, while the “under” means 221 or fewer.
These three core markets—moneyline, spread, and total points—are the foundation of all NBA betting odds offered by top sportsbooks like DraftKings and FanDuel.

Why do NBA odds move during the day?
NBA odds shift throughout the day as sportsbooks react to new information—like injuries, lineup changes, betting volume, or expert action (often called “sharp money”). For example, if a star player is ruled out or a large amount of money comes in on one side, sportsbooks adjust the line to balance risk and reflect the latest data. This constant movement ensures odds stay accurate and competitive across the market.
What’s the difference between spread, moneyline, and totals?
Spread: A handicap that evens the playing field between teams. The favorite must win by more than the listed points, while the underdog can lose by fewer or win outright.
Moneyline: A bet on which team will win the game outright, regardless of margin. Favorites have negative odds (e.g., -150), and underdogs have positive odds (e.g., +130).
Totals (Over/Under): A bet on the combined total points scored by both teams. You’re predicting whether the final score will go over or under the number set by the sportsbook.
