March Madness Picks Thursday March 24, 2022
Arkansas vs. Gonzaga, 7:10PM ET
Pick by The Degenerates
Gonzaga and Arkansas are set to clash in San Francisco here, which will feature two teams that had high expectations coming into the season. Arkansas is fresh off back-to-back victories against Vermont and New Mexico State in rounds 1 and 2 of the NCAA tournament, but they will face their toughest competition tonight. On the other side, Gonzaga had to overcome a 10-point halftime deficit but came away with the win against Memphis.
Arkansas is led by JD Notae, who comes into this game averaging 18.4 PPG to go along with 3.6 APG. Notae is going to play a huge factor in this matchup as the Razorbacks need to get scoring from the guard position. Another critical player in this game is Jaylin Williams, who is averaging 10.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. Williams will be tasked with dealing with Chet Holmgren and Drew Timme, and he should create nightmares for both. Au’Diese Toney will also be crucial in this one, as he is one of the best wing rebounders in the country corralling 5.2 per game while also contributing over 10 points per game.
To compete in this game, Arkansas is going to have to almost mimic the game plan that Memphis had against the Zags. Memphis was able to cause a ton of turnovers and they crashed the glass every possession. The Razorbacks are top performers in both turnover-rate and defensive rebounding, so expect them to crash the glass hard and get out in transition.
Arkansas has been battle-tested all year long playing in the SEC gauntlet. The Razorbacks getting almost 10 points in any game is a play we’ll almost always take, and we expect Arkansas to compete for a win until the very end tonight.

Michigan vs. Villanova, 7:40PM ET
Pick by Prospector Sam
Almost every season you see a team get overseeded in the Tournament and then get rewarded for it. This years winner of the “Committee Lottery” (or, more appropriately, the “Committee cares about things besides basketball like money and storylines circus”) was Michigan, who didn’t deserve anything more than a First Four bid, only to get an 11 Seed and a date with a Mountain West team that was outmatched on paper from an athleticism standpoint. They won that game, coupled with an impressive win over Tennessee (I’m not completely spiteful), but the buck stops here.
Michigan thrives on being oversized and long (Writers Note:...... that was unintentionally phallic and I apologize) up front with Dickinson being the focal point of that approach. And while Nova’s tallest starter is just 6 foot 8, which will create a size mismatch, their high energy defense and 14th ranked scoring efficiency are going to cause nightmares for Michigan. If the Wolverines can hit 3s and spread Villanova’ defense then they have a very real chance of winning, but they don’t shoot a high percentage from behind the arc and that will allow the Wildcats to help more down low. Add in that Michigan has won three games in a row just ONCE all season and it’s hard to expect consistency from them either. I think the Wildcats, with experienced players and coaching, will handle this comfortably.
