Patriots vs. Cardinals NFL Predictions for Monday Night Football on December 12, 2022

Back-to-back losses has left the New England Patriots no margin for error as far as the AFC playoff picture is concerned, so a win over the Arizona Cardinals on Monday is a must. New England heads to Arizona having split its first dozen games and likely needing to run the table to snag a wild-card spot. The Cardinals, meanwhile, come off a bye and a playoff-killing 25-24 loss to the Chargers in the final 10 seconds in Week 12.

Arizona’s schedule is quite manageable the rest of the way with only one opponent sitting better than .500 (San Francisco) at this stage. However, are the Cards really capable of ripping off five straight wins when they haven’t won two in a row?

Find out how we think this one will play out in our Patriots vs. Cardinals betting preview.

Will The Patriots Cover The Spread?

There seems to be some friction in Glendale. Kyler Murray knocked head coach Kliff Kingsbury following the Week 12 loss, saying “Schematically, we were kind of f---ed” after throwing an interception on a key fourth down against the Chargers.

Getting an early lead would go a long way for New England, which struggled in its own right offensively against Buffalo last Thursday with a noticeably frustrated Mac Jones.

Will The Cardinals Cover The Spread?

Murray, who has missed a couple of games, has passed for 2,359 yards and 14 touchdowns with seven interceptions and rushed for 415 yards and three scores. He’s struggled against some of the better schemed defenses and will face another here.

It hasn’t helped that DeAndre Hopkins (six-game suspension) and Hollywood Brown (injured) have played a combined 13 games. Both will be on the field Monday night.

Why The Over Will Hit

Arizona games have gone up and down the field over the past six weeks and Kingsbury has nothing to lose but to let it rip. Murray having all of his weapons at his disposal, minus injured tight end Zach Ertz, can be electric as he’s proven throughout his career.

Defensively, the Cardinals are among the top-10 units when it comes to stopping the run so that may lead Bill Belichick to attack Arizona’s biggest weakness — a pass defense allowing more than 260 yards per game to rate 25th.

Jones wasn’t great against the Bills but hasn’t thrown an interception in four straight games.

Why The Under Will Hit

Given key absences, it’s not hard to believe the Cardinals rank 19th in total offense and have lacked consistency all season.

Both teams have passed the ball more than they’ve run it, but that hasn’t always added up to points on the board. New England has allowed only five rushing touchdowns in a dozen games, but Arizona’s James Connor has nine in seven games so something’s gotta give.

Patriots vs. Cardinals Prediction

Lean: Patriots -1.5

Arizona has dropped four of five and has been one of the league’s biggest disappointments. The Cards are also 1-6 in home games (one in Mexico City) and are either overdue or just very bad.
