2021 Golf Majors: Previews, Predictions and Plays

2020 was a wild year in every sense of the word and the PGA Tour was no different. We preview the holy grails of golf, the four Majors, spanning two continents.

First off, let's look at 2020. We only had three majors, with the Open Championship unable to go ahead due to travel restrictions, and then the three winners were a 23 year-old in his just his third major, a man dubbed ‘the mad scientist’ who hits the ball farther than could’ve been imagined even two years ago, and a guy securing just his second major despite holding 27 professional wins.

So, we had Morikawa, DeChambeau and Johnson in 2020, but who will be lifting the four major trophies in 2021? 

Let’s have a look at a couple of options at each tournament that we could cash in on come major season 👇

⛳ 2021 Masters Tournament

Yep, we’re set to be back at Augusta just months after the 2020 edition and there are PLENTY of storylines behind the 2021 Masters Tournament.

As well as these and many more, another plotline that is going to continue to be The Big Golfer, with Bryson DeChambeau out to rectify a disappointing performance at the November Masters. Bryson talked the talk about how his game would be able to pull the famous course apart, and frankly, although he struggled last time out, he’s going to find it there one day soon. 

As for some of the players presenting more value, there’s one guy that stands out here at Dimers HQ. Francesco Molinari is a recent major winner and a proven performer at Augusta (at least until the 12th hole in 2019). Despite the collapse that allowed Tiger to come through for a big win, his futures odds right now are way too good to ignore:

⛳ 2021 PGA Championship

The PGA Championship heads to The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in 2021 with Collin Morikawa the defending champion. Morikawa stormed home with a 65-64 weekend at Harding Park to win by two strokes. The young American held off a host of big names who will all be out to go one better in 2021.

The final Top-5 included past champ Jason Day, eventual US Open and Masters winners in Bryson DeChambeau and Dustin Johnson, and fellow young guns, Scottie Scheffler and Matthew Wolff.

Looking ahead to 2021 and it’s another big name who had a solid weekend in 2020 that we like to win this one, with Jon Rahm coming in as our top pick. The Spaniard is yet to break through for his first major win despite Top-4 finishes in three of them and a T11 at the 2019 Open Championship.

If you’re looking for some more value, you could do much worse than Tony Finau who has finished Top-5 in all four major tournaments, including a T4 in this tournament in 2020.

⛳ 2021 US Open

Torrey has hosted the US Open once before, when a guy called Tiger Woods bobbed up for a win back in 2008. When hosting the Farmers Insurance and other PGA events, both the North and South courses are used through the first two days of the tournament, but for 2021 US Open, as was the case in 2008, just the South Course will be utilized.

One guy that stands out as someone who will be determined to find himself on the winner’s board in a 2021 major is Justin Thomas, who won his first back in 2017 but hasn’t been able to add to it since.

Looking at the winners of the Farmers Insurance in previous years, it’s obvious that iron play and ball striking are a key attribute in many of the winners (2020 - Marc Leishman, 2019 - Justin Rose, 2018 - Jason Day, 2017 - Jon Rahm). JT is universally known as one of the best iron players in the world and should find himself in the mix at Torrey.

Another guy who we can actually get at much longer odds who has been right in a whole bunch of majors of the past few years is Patrick Reed. Reed won the Masters back in 2018 and has a career best finish of T4 at the US Open from that same year.

⛳ 2021 Open Championship

After a year off due to obvious reasons, the Open Championship returns in 2021 for its 149th edition. Unsurprisingly, The Open has been dominated by European's in recent years, with four of the past six winners hailing from the continent. After the 2020 tournament was postponed, the event returns to Royal St. George’s in England where it has been held 14 times, the most recent of which was in 2011.

That year, the tournament was won by Northern Irishman, Darren Clarke, having previously been taken out by American Ben Curtis (2003) and Australian Greg Norman (1993).

Now, looking ahead, there’s one European, or more specifically, one British player, that stands out amongst the pack. Rory McIlroy won the Open Championship back in 2014 and having not won any major for over five years now, the most talented golfer since Tiger Woods is certainly due.

And speaking of Tiger Woods, surely the great man has one more Open Championship run in him. Tiger finished T3 at St George’s in 2003 and withdrew due to injury in 2011, so he will be priming himself for this one as he seeks that elusive 16th major victory, as he continues to chase down Jack’s 18.
