Finn from the Tail and Print Podcast previews this week's Sony Open, providing free picks from this week's edition.
Welcome back everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and are as jacked up as I am to have Golf back on my TV four days a week. 2022 promises to be one for the ages with so many possible story lines, however that is for the 2022 predictions blog which will be coming out later. For now let us all sit back, grab a beer and get lei’d and take a first look at The Sony Open in Hawaii this week.
First we will start with the beautiful course that will be playing host this weekend at The Waialae Country Club. This week's course is a Par 70 and measures out at roughly 7,044 yards depending on tee and pin placements. The fairways will be much narrower than the mile wide ones we had last week. The course will also play much flatter than what we saw last week as well. Still the average score here the last few years has been -19 so expect there to be some low scores posted. Kevin Na outlasted Brendan Steele on Sunday and put on a putting clinic to capture another PGA Tour victory. Na is hoping to become the event’s first back to back winner since Jimmy Walker(14 & 15). To do so he will have to outlast a decent field that includes last week's winner Cameron Smith along with current FedEx Cup leader Talor Gooch.
While my final picks and betting card will be posted here for you along with my rationale behind those picks, let's take an early look and see if there is anything that pops out. Also, sign up for our PGA One and Done Contest where we will be giving out thousands of dollars in prizes along with PGA Tickets and merchandise! Without further ado let's check out the odds for this week courtesy of FanDuel.
Right off the jump we have last week's Sentry ToC Winner and the 2020 Sony Open Winner, Cameron Smith coming in as the odds on favorite at +850. Bryson who would have been right there as well has just withdrawn citing a lingering wrist injury he was hoping to power through but he has done the smart thing and took some time off as we are still very early into the PGA Tour Season. After that I have to say this board looks fan-f*cking-tastic. Seriously I am looking at this board like a fat kid looks at cake or like Kim Kardashian looks at a mirror. In fact, picture me right now doing this exactly.

Webb Simpson is a great guy and all but he and frig right off this week. Sungjae my sweet sultry sexy man is a great bet especially after playing last week but there is more value to be had down the board. While I will never say don’t bet on Sungae I will say maybe also consider some names further down. Matsuyama, Leishman and Na are nice bets and just like Sungaje I dont hate any of them, but I like other guys' odds better. I’d say Harris English, Talor Gooch and Kisner jumped out to me first. Gooch, the current FedEx Cup leader, is off to a hot start this year and at +3400 I don't hate throwing a couple bucks on him. Kisner is coming off a good showing last week and I am really liking anyone who played last week and got to shake the rust off.

Matt Jones is another guy who played last week, coming off a 3rd place finish in which he posted the 3rd best score EVER in PGA Tour History at -32. Couple that with his T11 finish here last year and I am definitely gonna be putting a couple bucks on Jones this week and I’d recommend doing the same. I also recommend doing the same for Chris Kirk and Brendan Steele. Steele has sniffed the winners circle here so many times including last year where he had the 54 hole hole lead after coming in 2nd place the year before. Last year, Chris Kirk needed to finish 2nd or better to get his tour card extended following a medical extension and he went out and did just that, shooting a 65 each round last year. He clearly lies this course playing that consistently under such pressure. Also if you want a nice feel good story read up about everything Chris Kirk has overcome to get back to where he is today. Both of those guys coming in at +5500 is definitely worth a small wager in hopes of hitting big, but I'd eye these two more in the T20, T10 and DFS department although Steele may be a chalk pick in DFS. There are a few long shots who I am all hot and bothered by this week such as Stephen Jaeger (+16000), Harry Higgs (+16000) and Adam Schenk (+19000).
The Top 20 odds and such have yet to drop on FanDuel; however I was able to see them on Draftkings if you want to check that out. From what I saw they look amazing, and since I am the king of T20 bets you bet your behind I will do a deep dive and have the best picks for you in time to make your bets this week. Be sure to check out this week's podcast where we will break down The Sony Open in more detail and give out our official picks for the week!
