PICK: Carolina Hurricanes at Dallas Stars Over 5.5 (-125)
Off a 3 day break, the Carolina Hurricanes head to Dallas to face the Stars tonight at American Airlines Center, in a battle of Division leaders.
The Canes hold the first spot in the Metropolitan Division with 66 points and are winners of 4 of their last 5 games. The Dallas Stars are first in the Central Division with 64 points and are coming off a 3-2 overtime home loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Monday night.
Looking at this matchup on paper you would think this would be a low scoring game, but based off of their home/away splits, I am going to go the other way. On the road this season, the Hurricanes average 3.1 goals per game on 35 shots per game. The Over is 13-11 in their road games, as opposed to 9-12 at home.
Carolina's offense is also hot as they are averaging 3.8 goals per game over their last 10 games. They are led, offensively, by Martin Necas, who has 41 points this season and is 2nd on the team with 18 goals.
At home this season, the Stars average 3.8 goals per game, which is 2nd best in the league, on 33 shots per game. The Over is 11-9 in their home games, as opposed to 7-18 on the road. Over their last ten games the Stars are averaging 2.7 goals per game.
They are led, offensively, by Jason Robertson, who leads the team with 32 goals, 32 assists and 65 points. Their forward group also got a bump as Roope Hitnz returned from injury on Monday night. These teams met in December, in Carolina, which resulted in a 5-4 Carolina win in Overtime.
Over the last 5 head to head meetings, the Over 5.5 hit in 4 of those meetings. Jake Oettinger and Freddy Andersen are the probable goalies, who both can be very stingy, but despite that I will back the over here as it is tough to pass up a 5.5 in today's NHL.
