Kalshi traders are putting money behind the answer of whether the US economy will fall into a recession in 2027, as a mixture of slowing job growth, persistent inflation and uncertainty over interest rates clouds the economic outlook.
The prediction market lets traders take positions on whether a US recession will occur, turning changing economic expectations into a market price. As of October 6, 2026, the market priced “Yes” at 20% and “No” at 80%.
For now, the economic picture is mixed; growth has remained resilient but several indicators are giving traders reasons to watch 2027 closely.
Employment is one of the biggest indicators to watch. The US added just 29,000 jobs in September 2026, which was substantially below economists` expectations of 90,000, while the unemployment rate rose to 4.2%. August`s employment figures were also revised lower.
That doesn't mean the economy has entered a recession, since layoffs remain relatively low and the rise in unemployment partly reflected increased labor-force participation.
Other parts of the economy continue to expand; the ISM services index registered 54.9 in September, remaining comfortably above the 50 level separating expansion from contraction.
For traders making economy predictions like this, the big question is whether this gradual cooling remains manageable or develops into a broader downturn during 2027.
The Federal Reserve represents another major variable, since inflation remains above the Fed`s 2% target, creating the possibility that interest rates will need to stay higher for longer.
The Fed raised its policy rate in September, while policymakers have indicated that additional tightening could still be necessary. Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari has said he expects further rate increase and previously projected another move in 2027.
That creates a difficult balance, since keeping rates elevated could help contain inflation, but tighter financial conditions can also weigh on borrowing, investment and consumer demand.
At the same time, geopolitical tensions, energy prices and supply disruptions provide additional risks that could affect both growth and inflation.
A recession isn't officially defined simply as two consecutive quarters of falling GDP. The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) determines US business-cycle peaks and troughs, and it defines a recession as a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy and lasting more than a few months.
Its assessment considers factors including employment, production, and income rather than relying on GDP alone. That distinction matters for prediction markets, and Kalshi`s resolution rules are worth looking over to clarify what event or official determination is required for a contract to settle “Yes”.
Kalshi prices change as traders react to employment reports, inflation figures, Fed decisions and other economic news. A higher Yes price indicates that the market is assigning a higher implied probability to the recession outcome.
It remains a forecast rather than a certainty since economic conditions can change significantly before or during 2027, especially as monetary policy responds to new inflation and employment data.
To compare how traders on other sites are viewing the situation, our list of prediction markets can provide a broader picture as new data reshapes expectations for 2027.
