Understanding NHL odds: How to read NHL betting lines

NHL odds, sometimes called Vegas odds, tell you how much you stand to win from a bet. They also reflect how a sportsbook is pricing an outcome, with its margin built into the price.

When reading the NHL betting lines on this page, there are a few key terms to understand:

  • Market: The type of bet you're looking at, such as moneyline, puck line, or total.
  • Line: The number attached to the market. For example, a puck line is usually -1.5, while a total might be set at 6.5 goals.
  • Odds: The price attached to a bet. The odds determine how much profit you can make based on your stake.
  • Probability: The percentage represented by the odds. This is the implied probability of that outcome based on the price. Looking at probability can make it easier to compare prices across sportsbooks.
  • Consensus: The widespread average line, odds, and probability across the sportsbooks tracked by Dimers. It gives you a quick view of how the broader market is pricing the matchup.

NHL odds formats: American, decimal, and probability

Dimers lets you view NHL odds in American, decimal, or probability format, so you can choose the display that makes the most sense to you.

  • American odds: This is the standard format at US sportsbooks. A minus sign indicates a favorite, while a plus sign indicates an underdog. A negative number shows how much you need to stake to win $100, while a positive number shows how much profit you would make from a $100 bet. If the Florida Panthers are -155 and the Edmonton Oilers are +125, a $100 bet on the Panthers would return $155, including $55 in profit. A $100 bet on the Oilers would return $225, including $125 in profit.
  • Decimal odds: Decimal odds show your total return for every $1 you stake, including your original bet. If the Panthers are 1.64, a $1 bet returns $1.64, giving you 64 cents in profit. If the Oilers are 2.25, a $1 bet returns $2.25, giving you $1.25 in profit. To calculate your potential return, multiply your stake by the decimal odds.
  • Probability: The probability view shows the implied probability represented by each price. You can also see the consensus probability, which provides a quick reference for how the broader market is pricing an outcome. You can compare a sportsbook's probability with the consensus to find another way to assess the price you're being offered.

Remember, sportsbooks build a margin into their odds so they can make a profit over time. This margin is known as the "vig," short for vigorish, or the "juice." Because sportsbooks can offer different prices on the same bet, comparing NHL odds can help you find a more competitive price.

What NHL betting markets do we track?

Three markets carry most NHL betting volume:

  • Moneyline: Which team wins the game, overtime and shootout included. The favorite carries a minus price, the underdog a plus price.
  • Puck line: Hockey's spread, almost always set at 1.5 goals because so many games finish inside two. The favorite at -1.5 has to win by two or more. The underdog at +1.5 covers by losing by one or winning outright.
  • Total goals: The combined score of both teams, usually set between 5.5 and 6.5, with most books counting overtime goals. A total of 5.5 means the over needs six goals and the under needs five or fewer.

Some books also price player props, which you can find on our page for NHL Props.

How Dimers finds the best NHL odds

Dimers brings the NHL betting market together in one place. For every game on the slate, the NHL odds table shows the matchup and consensus price, followed by the lines available from individual sportsbooks. A 🏆 marks the best available price, so you can quickly see which sportsbook is offering the most competitive odds.

You can customize the table to focus on exactly what you're looking for:

  • Choose your market: Switch between moneyline, puck line, and totals.
  • Compare sportsbooks: See the lines and prices available from each sportsbook tracked by Dimers.
  • Check the consensus: Use the consensus line, price, and probability as a quick reference for how the market is priced.
  • Change the odds display: Switch between American odds, decimal odds, and probability.
  • Filter by state: See the sportsbooks and betting options available in your state.
  • Find the best price: Look for the 🏆 to quickly identify the best available price for a market.

The consensus probability can give you another useful reference when comparing prices. You can see how an individual sportsbook's price compares with the broader market, then use that information alongside the available lines when assessing a bet.

Whether you're checking one matchup or scanning the entire NHL slate, Dimers gives you the market context and sportsbook prices in one view, without having to check multiple books individually.

How to use our NHL odds for tonight’s games

Once you know how to read NHL odds, the next step is knowing what to look for when comparing prices. Dimers makes it easy to scan the market and spot differences between sportsbooks.

  • Compare moneyline prices: The same moneyline bet can be offered at different prices depending on the sportsbook. For example, if the Boston Bruins are -150 at one book and -135 at another, the -135 price returns more profit on the same $100 stake. Over a full NHL season, those differences can add up.
  • Check puck line prices: Puck line prices can vary even when sportsbooks offer the same line. If the Detroit Red Wings are -1.5 at -110 at one sportsbook and -1.5 at -105 at another, the -105 price offers a higher potential return on the same stake. Look for the 🏆 in the Dimers table to quickly identify the best available price.
  • Compare totals and lines: Sportsbooks can differ on both the price and the total itself. For example, an over 5.5 and an over 6 are different bets, since a game finishing with exactly six goals would win at 5.5 but push at 6. Comparing both the line and price can help you see where sportsbooks differ before placing a bet.
  • Use consensus probability: Switch the table to the Probability view to see the implied probability represented by each price. The consensus probability gives you a market-level reference that you can use alongside individual sportsbook prices when assessing a bet.

Responsible gambling

Line shopping is a habit worth having, and it can quietly turn into betting more games than you meant to, because a better price always looks like a reason to bet. Set a limit before you bet and stay inside it. Treat a losing bet as money spent rather than something to win back on the late game, and only ever bet what you can afford to lose.

If gambling is causing harm for you or someone close to you, our responsible gambling resources have support services and self-exclusion options.

What are NHL Vegas odds?

NHL Vegas odds is a common name for hockey betting prices, left over from when Nevada was the only legal market in the US. The prices on this page come from the major North American sportsbooks, so they are the same markets that a Las Vegas book offers on the same game.
