Snowbird has penciled in Friday, November 27, the day after Thanksgiving, as opening day for 2026-27.
Traders on Kalshi mostly believe it, putting an 83% chance on lifts spinning before November 29, though that same market spent part of last week pricing it the other way.
The resort is set to open on November 27, conditions permitting. Snowbird's own opening day page calls the date tentative and says terrain and lift operations will depend on external conditions.
Last season, the resort targeted the exact same date for 2025-26, then opened on December 7, ten days late, with Gadzoom and Chickadee carrying the first skiers.
Kalshi's Snowbird opening market splits into weekly cutoffs. As of October 27, those include:
Opens Before - Chance
With the implied probability in mind, the opening looks close to certain by early December.
Trading volume sits at just $7,379 since the market opened on September 22, low enough for a few trades to move things. The price history shows it, too, with the Nov 29 line sliding from around 80% to near single digits for a stretch in late October before snapping back up. The Nov 22 line fell 68 points in the same swing and hasn't recovered.
That said, expect volatility if you trade here – it can be either a good or a bad thing, depending on your preferences.
Kalshi's rules are strict. At least one lift must carry members of the public uphill for skiing or snowboarding on open terrain, and season pass holders must be able to ride without paying extra.
Plenty of factors don’t count, such as employee days, media previews, scenic rides, and uphill-only access. The opening day is determined based on Eastern Time.
Anyone browsing prediction market apps will find similar opening-date markets for other resorts, Snowbasin included.
Snow decides everything. NOAA's winter outlook, out in mid-October, gave the Intermountain West equal odds of below, near or above normal precipitation for December through February, with a strong El Niño still building.
That's no help either way, honestly. Traders who follow climate predictions know an El Niño year can tilt the northern West toward warmer conditions, and early-season snowmaking only goes so far without cold nights.
Ski openings sit in an unusual space, part weather bet, part event market, and the format will feel familiar to anyone used to sports prediction markets with fixed cutoff dates.
Ultimately, the Thanksgiving weekend is currently the consensus for Snowbird opening this year; early December is the near-certain fallback. A late-November storm would lock it in; a dry stretch could repeat last year's slip, so expect the Nov 29 price to keep moving.
