Virginia Sports Betting by the Numbers

The Virginia Lottery reports statewide totals about a month after each month ends; it doesn't publish figures for each sportsbook. August 2026 is the latest month:

July 2026 was even busier, with $609.2 million wagered, up about 42% on July 2025, as the World Cup filled the summer schedule. Virginia's record month for handle is October 2025, at $831.6 million, and betting usually climbs through the football season.

BetRivers is linked to Rivers Casino Portsmouth, theScore Bet took over from ESPN Bet in December 2025, and Bally Bet is also licensed. How to Sign Up With a Virginia Sportsbook

Virginia Sports Betting Laws

Virginia's General Assembly passed HB 896 and SB 384 in 2020, and the law took effect on July 1, 2020. The Virginia Lottery was put in charge, and FanDuel launched online betting on January 21, 2021. Retail betting followed once the state's first casinos opened, starting with Hard Rock Bristol on July 8, 2022.

• Age: You must be 21 or older.
• Location: You must be physically in Virginia to bet online, but you don't have to live there.
• College betting: You can't bet on any game involving a Virginia college team, such as Virginia, Virginia Tech, VCU or James Madison, and prop bets on college games aren't allowed at all. A 2026 bill to allow bets on Virginia teams (HB 1527) died in committee in February.
• Other banned markets: Youth sports, and props on injuries or officiating decisions.
• Credit cards: Since July 1, 2026, Virginia sportsbooks can't accept credit card deposits (HB 515).
• Tax: Sportsbooks pay 15% of their adjusted gross revenue. Most goes to the state's General Fund, with 2.5% set aside for problem gambling treatment and support.
• Daily fantasy sports: A 2026 law (HB 145) moves DFS oversight to the Virginia Lottery with a 10% tax.
