Kalshi traders are pricing in when the first useful quantum computer will be developed, putting a timeline on a technology that could completely change how many industries operate, such as medicine, energy, encryption, and cybersecurity.
Quantum computers rely on qubits and effects, including entanglement, interference, and superposition, to process information differently from classical computers. Quantum mechanics provides the foundation for quantum computing, and its potential lies in solving specialized problems that are difficult for classical computers to solve efficiently.
Kalshi’s rules define “useful” through specific milestones, including cracking 2048-bit RSA encryption with Shor’s algorithm or accurately simulating either the nitrogenase FeMo cofactor or the cytochrome P450 enzyme.
At the time of writing, Kalshi traders priced the likelihood of the first useful quantum computer arriving before 2027 at 2%, before 2030 at 42.8%, before 2035 at 54.4%, and before 2040 at 62%.
Kalshi is one of the best-established prediction markets where users can trade on contracts associated with a variety of real-world events. This quantum-computing market is one example of the markets associated with emerging technologies covered by tech prediction sites.
Kalshi opened this market on August 14, 2025, more than a year ago, asking traders to predict when the first useful quantum computer will be developed.
As of October 23, 2026, the total trading volume exceeded $48,000, suggesting that this is a topic many Kalshi traders are interested in. Kalshi’s market put the probability of a useful quantum computer arriving before 2027 at only 2%, with Yes contracts trading at 2¢.
The chances rise to 42.8% before 2030 (42.9¢ per Yes contract), 54.4% before 2035 (54.3¢ per Yes contract), and 62% before 2040 (62.1¢ per Yes contract). Prices are expected to shift as new information is released and as more traders join the market.
Kalshi’s market rules count a quantum computer as “useful” if it cracks 2048-bit RSA encryption using Shor’s algorithm or if it accurately simulates either the cytochrome P450 enzyme or the nitrogenase FeMo cofactor. Contracts resolve Yes if one of those milestones is reached before the listed deadline. The market will close early if the outcome occurs.
Kalshi’s rules list the sources that may be used to verify the outcome, including official publications from Google, Quantinuum, IBM, IonQ, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Among the sources that may be used to verify the outcome, Kalshi also mentions news outlets, including Bloomberg, the Associated Press, Reuters, and The Wall Street Journal.
Kalshi’s tech markets cover many more topics besides quantum computing. Other tech and science-related markets cover space launches, autonomous vehicles, and AI rankings. In “Best AI this month?”, Gemini leads with 82%, ahead of Claude at 17%. In the “Best AI this week” market, Gemini also leads at 95%, compared with 7% for Claude.
Beyond tech and science, Kalshi also allows its traders to forecast real-world events across other categories, including economics, climate, crypto, sports, politics, and more.
