Online Casinos California 2026: Top Casino-Style Alternatives in CA

No Legal Online Casinos in California

Take a look through our site here at Dimers and you’ll find there are very few opportunities to play games at US online casinos, since only a handful of states permit them to operate within their jurisdictions. And right now, California isn’t one of them, meaning it’s not possible to play safe and legal online slots and table games in the state using real money.

It’s fair to say that lawmakers in the Golden State have been resistant to online casinos and casino-style gambling, so your options are fairly limited if you want to wager real money on random outcomes, whether through playing games or backing your favorite sports teams. You’ll need to head for one of the in-person tribal casinos if you want to lay your bankroll on the line — which means you’ll also need to take some extra costs into consideration to cover your travel and hospitality expenses. But for now, you won’t be able to sign up to any online gambling sites in California, and the situation doesn’t look set to change any time soon.

Sweepstakes Casinos Are Prohibited in California As of January 1, 2026

Until recently, gaming fans in California could sign up and play at sweepstakes casinos, which enabled free gameplay with the potential to claim tangible rewards along the way. This is a particular feature of sweepstakes gaming sites, which don’t permit real-money deposits or real-money gameplay, relying instead on virtual currencies known as Coins. These Coins come in two distinct types:

• Gold Coins (GC) are just for entertainment purposes, with an introductory award designed to get new players off to a flying start. More bonuses are available as players return to play more games, with an option to buy additional Gold Coins - which isn’t compulsory. Gold Coins have no cash value, so they can’t be exchanged for any real-world prizes.
• Sweeps Coins (SC) are free, promotional tokens that are never available for purchase, so players must rely on free gifts and bonuses. They also have no value when awarded, but playing them through in line with the operator’s rules leads to redeemable SC winnings, which can be exchanged for real cash, digital gift cards and even crypto in some cases. .

However, California has now moved to shut down this prize-based sweepstakes casino model. Sweepstakes-style online casinos offering cash or cash-equivalent redemptions are prohibited in California as of January 1, 2026.

How the Ban on Sweepstakes Casinos in California Happened

Assembly Bill 831 (AB 831) began as a bill focused on tribal gaming compact issues, but it was later significantly amended to target online sweepstakes-style casino sites. The bill drew pushback from sweepstakes operators and some stakeholders, who criticized the process and argued the language could be too broad. But the measure ultimately passed and was signed into law in 2025, with the prohibition taking effect on January 1, 2026.

As the effective date approached, some sweepstakes sites exited the California market earlier, while others stayed open up until the cutoff point. This gave players time to meet any remaining playthrough requirements (where applicable) and request final redemptions under each site’s rules.

A quick timeline of how it played out:

• Summer 2025: AB 831 advanced through committees as lawmakers debated whether dual-currency sweepstakes sites were operating in a legal gray area.
• September 2025: The bill cleared the Legislature with unanimous support in both chambers.
• October 11, 2025: Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 831 into law.
• January 1, 2026: The prohibition takes effect statewide.

Where to Find Legal Casino Games in California

With no real-money online casinos available in the Golden State, and sweepstakes casinos prohibited as of January 1, 2026, you’re probably wondering what your options are if you want to enjoy slot-style gameplay, along with roulette, blackjack, baccarat and other casino favorites.

Playing casino-style games for real money is only permitted in-person at tribal casinos throughout California, which gives you a wide range of destinations to choose from across the state.

If you’d rather play online, you should consider social casinos that remain unaffected by the sweepstakes prohibition. That’s because they don’t make use of a dual-currency system, offering only Gold Coin gameplay. With no potential for redeeming virtual Coin winnings for real prizes, Gold Coin–only social casinos may still be able to operate within California state lines.

Another option is to check out skill-based games. Some regulated platforms offer tournaments, where players who top the leaderboards receive a share of the entry fees. These games are different from casino-style gambling and may be accessible from your phone or computer without needing to leave home.

The Current State of Online Casinos in California Summarized

Sweepstakes casinos are prohibited in California as of January 1, 2026, and there are still no state-licensed real-money online casinos operating in the Golden State. That means players looking for legal casino-style options will generally be choosing between in-person tribal casinos and entertainment-only social casinos that use Gold Coins without any prize redemptions.

Before you sign up anywhere, it’s a good idea to read the site’s Terms and confirm whether it restricts California users, especially if it offers any kind of cash or cash-equivalent prize redemption tied to gameplay.
