New York Sports Betting by the Numbers

New York taxes online sportsbooks at 51% of their revenue, one of the highest rates in the country, and the state still collects more sports betting tax than any other. The New York State Gaming Commission publishes figures for every sportsbook each week. These are the latest monthly totals for online betting, alongside the full year for 2025:

DraftKings was one of the four sportsbooks that launched on January 8, 2022, and it's a close second to FanDuel, with 35.0% of September handle. It offers one of the deepest NBA and NFL prop menus in the state, plus Same Game Parlay and SGP+ tools, fast live betting and daily profit boosts.

New customers who sign up with DraftKings and place a first bet of $5 or more get $200 in Bonus Bets, paid out over 21 days, plus three months of NBA League Pass. Caesars Sportsbook New York

Fanatics Sportsbook has grown into New York's third-biggest sportsbook, with 11.2% of September handle. It's known for FanCash, the rewards currency you can spend on Knicks, Yankees or Bills gear in the Fanatics store. Its welcome offer excludes New York. BetMGM New York

BetMGM is strong on futures and runs daily odds boosts on the biggest games, and its BetMGM Rewards program links to MGM Resorts properties around the country. Other New York Sportsbooks

Three smaller sportsbooks are also licensed: BetRivers, which launched with the first group in January 2022; theScore Bet, which took over from ESPN Bet in December 2025; and Bally Bet. Resorts World Bet stopped taking bets in New York at the end of June 2025.

How to Sign Up With a New York Sportsbook

4. Step 4: Turn on location services. New York sportsbooks check that you're inside the state before they accept a bet.

New York Sports Betting Laws

Retail sports betting started at Rivers Casino in Schenectady on July 16, 2019, under a 2013 law that allowed upstate commercial casinos to take bets once the federal ban was lifted. The state budget signed in April 2021 legalized mobile betting, and Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel and BetRivers took the first online bets on January 8, 2022.

• Age: You must be 21 or older to bet online or at a retail sportsbook.
• Location: You must be physically in New York to bet online, but you don't have to live there.
• College betting: You can't bet on any game involving a New York college team, wherever it's played, and player props on college games aren't offered. Betting on high school sports is banned.
• Tax: Online sportsbooks pay 51% of their revenue in tax, and retail sportsbooks pay 10%. Most of the money goes to education, and the state doubled its problem gambling funding from the tax this fiscal year.
• New rules: In October 2026, the Gaming Commission advanced proposed rules that would limit promotions and bet suggestions personalized by AI and require sportsbooks to identify at-risk players. They go to another round of public comment before they can take effect.
