Hedge your social bets by making alternative selections.
Consider using a mix of low-risk and high-risk picks.
Always use stats and current game info to make educated social wagers.
Social sportsbooks like Fliff and Rebet are incredibly fun, but it can be frustrating when your social bets lose and you are constantly waiting for more virtual currencies to get added to your account.
If you hear me, then I want to introduce you to a special strategy you can consider using to reduce risk and give yourself more chance of managing your coin balance effectively. I’m talking about hedging. This is a widely practiced strategy used often at social sportsbooks and as you will see below, it’s a type of risk-mitigation technique.
Hedging is the process of placing a secondary social pick on an opposite outcome to your main selection. The aim is to still get a prize, but reducing your risk factor by essentially placing picks on both outcomes. Whatever happens in a series of games - you will get at least once prize so you will either make a small loss, break even, or get a big positive prize.
Let me give an example to explain. You have the following NBA games:
You want to make a trixie social pick where you essentially have 4 selections - 3 doubles (Denver to win, Boston to win, and Milwaukee to win), and 1 treble (all 3 teams to win). You get a prize if at least two of your teams win.
Let’s say that the action is progressing and Denver and Boston are winning comfortably, but Milwaukee is neck and neck with Indiana and it looks like it could do either way. To hedge your social picks in this scenario, you would place a single moneyline social pick on Indiana to win that would result in a prize that covers your original stake on the trixie social pick. Therefore, two things can happen:
Either way, you at least cover your original stake and the hedged pick on Indiana has allowed you to mitigate your risk. The downside is that with hedging, you are often ultimately reducing your overall amount of prizes - but you are reducing your risk factor which is the key benefit.
Aside from hedging, there are other things that I regularly do to help make more educated social picks and I’ve explained these top tips below:
If you want to make effective social picks on sites like Rebet, you have to be willing to put in the extra effort to look at stats and sports analysis. What is the H2H record between the two teams or players? Are there any injuries that could affect performance? Has a particular player been on a hot streak? Does a team notoriously perform poorly against a specific opponent? Be nerdy, dive into the stats, and use them to make more educated social picks!
Oftentimes these things have been accounted for with the odds that the social sportsbooks set, BUT I am always prudent and do my own research regardless. Once you get into it, it’s actually quite fun too! I find that nerding out other stats and performance has actually improved my viewing experience and enjoyment of sports in general!
We all have a favorite team - I love the Milwaukee Bucks. I completely understand wanting to make social picks on your team. But ask yourself, is this the logical pick to make? For example, would I be giving myself the best chances of getting prizes if I picked the Milwaukee Bucks to beat the Boston Celtics? Probably not. I am an advocate of placing social picks with your head, not with your heart - base your picks on cold hard facts and analysis - not your emotions.
Parlay social picks are incredibly fun - you might pick the moneyline on 5 NBA games on a Friday night for example. The prizes can be epic, and it’s just fun following the action of each game and willing your selected teams across the finish line.
I always add and remove each of my potential picks from a parlay to see what overall effect it has on the odds and my potential prize. This is because sometimes, adding more games that are a “dead cert” can often make no difference to your potential prize, and you are actually inadvertently giving yourself more room to fail.
For example, let’s say I had the Celtics to beat the Pistons, the Mavs to beat the Clippers, and the Lakers to beat the Grizzlies. In this scenario, the Celtics are going to be as close to a dead cert as possible and the odds could be something like -1000 for the single moneyline. Adding them to your Lakers and Mavs parlay might not even make any difference to your parlay prize due to the odds.
In this instance, it would probably be better to take the Celtics off and just have a two-game social parlay - that way, you still get the same potential prize but with less risk.
Most social sportsbooks like Fliff, Rebet, and Legendz have in-play picks available. This is where the odds fluctuate based on the live action as it unfolds. For example, the Celtics could be dominating the Bucks at the end of the first half, so the live moneyline social pick could be -1000 on the Celtics because they are now essentially guaranteed to win.
You can use in-play social picks to your advantage. Usually, when I use the in-play option, I also have a game on the TV or radio and watch the live game feed the social sportsbook provides. With this live knowledge, you are often able to make more educated social picks based on what’s actually happening, as opposed to futures social picks based on what is EXPECTED to happen.
You’ve got to be in it to win it as the saying goes, and if you want to move from being a casual social bettor who simply places social picks on their favorite team, to a strategic social picker that uses stats, and risk management then I advise taking the time to learn these above tips and consider giving them a try next time you open your social sportsbook app!
Hedging can be a great way to mitigate loss and to make sure you get at least some type of return regardless of the outcome. You can then look at other strategies and tips like mixing high and low risk social picks, the odds and risk associated with parlays, and backing your social picks using sports analysis and research. Also remember that when you register with social sportsbooks like Fliff and Rebet, there is usually a welcome bonus or first purchase available to give you a boost.
