Regular readers will know I’m a huge fan of quirky slots, so I’m always excited to see a new release from BGaming, which is renowned for its innovative designs and features. Halloween is coming up fast, so I’ve been trying out as many themed games as possible to kick start the holiday season, but I keep coming back to Haunted Reels - and I think there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy it too.
This isn’t a game you’ll need to play with the lights on, as the ghost in this slot is the game’s Wild, which is on hand to help with creating winning combos, thanks to a random multiplier that increases the value of each win up to 10x. He only appears during the base game, but there’s a friendly skeleton snoozing below the reels, who wakes up and takes charge when the bonus round spins up.

How to play Haunted Reels
Choose how many Coins to play on every spin, then hit the Spin button to activate Haunted Reels and see what unfolds. Low-value potions are joined by bats, spiders and candles, with colorful skulls offering the best potential returns for spinning up three or more on adjacent reels starting from the left.
Look out for the pumpkin Scatters, with 3, 4 or 5 in view awarding 5, 7 or 10 free spins respectively. But here the game takes a very different turn, switching to an entirely new set of reels. The 5 x 5 grid remains in place, but this time they’re filled with coffins - and now that sleeping skeleton below the game wakes up and starts taking an interest!

A feature-packed bonus round that comes with options!
Before the feature spins commence, one paytable icon is selected as the feature symbol. With every spin that follows, coffins open to reveal one of the following:
- A blank space
- 1 extra free spin
- The feature symbol
- A multiplier.
Feature symbols remain on the reels until the end of the round, when their combined value is awarded. Multipliers are collected by the skeleton and released onto the reels if you manage to spin up 5 of them, which are randomly applied to feature symbols before the win is assessed.
Buy the Feature and choose your volatility
If the Scatters don’t align for you as you play Haunted Reels, there are 3 bonus options available:
- Green Bonus:
The standard, low-volatility bonus is available for 50x your stake.
- Red Bonus:
This version comes with medium volatility and only high value symbols for 100x your stake.
- Purple Bonus:
This is a highly volatile option, but multipliers are awarded twice for bigger potential rewards, at 300x your stake.
I used Gold Coins to trigger the purple bonus three times in succession. The first time I landed a win of 100x, the second time this fell to an extremely disappointing 6x, at which point I thought about giving up. But my third attempt bucked the trend by rewarding me with a win worth 3,456x my stake, so I decided to quit while I was ahead - the volatility really is frighteningly intense and by far the scariest part of my gaming experience!
