Social sportsbooks have been on the rise in recent years. They are readily available across the US due to fewer restrictions regarding social sportsbooks. Now, a prominent driving force behind this is the online site Rebet.
Rebet is a new start-up site that became available earlier this year and has since expanded to 47 states across the US. If you want to know more about Rebet, check out the DIMERS

What Is a Social Sportsbook?
Let’s start by giving an overview of a Social Sportsbook. A social sportsbook explains itself. It takes features of traditional sports wagering and combines them with a social media element. Users can interact, share insights, and engage in activities with each other. The idea is to retain the excitement of sports betting but then share that experience, much like social media offers.
Social sportsbooks are more complex than they sound. They are a constantly evolving idea that aims to engage users more. The hope is that they appeal to traditional users and the younger generation. If done successfully, social sportsbooks will revolutionize people's engagement with sports like college basketball.
Legal Challenges
The legal landscape is one of the primary hurdles for social sportsbooks in revolutionizing college basketball (or any sport). College sports, including basketball, have traditionally been a sensitive area for gambling due to concerns about student-athlete integrity, NCAA regulations, and state laws.
In the US, sports betting is legal in some states, but college sports betting regulations vary. If states continue to loosen restrictions on betting, particularly on college sports, this could allow social sportsbooks to play a more prominent role in fan engagement and betting around college basketball.
The NCAA has recently relaxed some attitudes toward gambling, but college basketball still faces specific challenges. For instance, betting on college athletes is often more restricted than in professional leagues, and in some states, the legal framework only allows betting on professional sports.

How Can Success Be Obtained?
Social sportsbooks have the potential to appeal to a younger audience, who are more likely to engage with sports betting through digital and social platforms. With its broad fan base and highly engaged student and alums communities, college basketball could be a prime target for these platforms. Allowing fans to share their bets or create betting challenges would increase user engagement and bring more fun to the casual user. Micro-betting is also a feature these sites could explore. This again brings another level of engagement and increases usage as users may opt for more bets in smaller values.
Offering specific in-game events can further increase user engagement. These can include points scored by one player, the number of three-pointers made, or the number of free throws made. When more markets are offered, interest in the game builds up. People will have to watch more closely if they make specific bets, bringing more attention to college basketball. So, with all this in mind, social sportsbooks such as Rebet could revolutionize the sport.
Marketing Opportunites
Opportunities such as partnerships with college basketball teams and conferences could bring new revenue streams to a social sportsbook. These deals would provide extra monetization and brand awareness, increasing user traffic. Once a partnership is confirmed, the site could then boost engagement with referral bonuses and personalized content dependent on the partnership made. These partnerships can help establish a fanbase, and with that comes fan loyalty.
The Challenge Around the Ethics of College Basketball Sportsbooks
The rise of popularity in social sportsbooks could raise ethical concerns. College athletes are often not financially compensated while playing. This could lead to the exploitation of the social sportsbook system. This disputes the integrity of the game and could end with long legal battles and public debate. Another controversial topic is that of young users. A prime way social sportsbooks grow is to target a young audience with college sports. These sites need to be regulated with safeguards to avoid young people falling into trouble.

Competition from Traditional Sportsbooks
Social sportsbooks now gain their edge because of that social element. This is a service that traditional sportsbooks do not currently offer. But what would happen if conventional sportsbooks did start making these changes? It makes sense for them to; they typically have more resources and can afford to invest heavily in technological developments. The social element of the industry is still very untapped, and it would impact social sportsbooks massively if traditional ones made the transition. It is one reason social sportsbooks must act quickly to cement their position and be pioneers in revolutionizing sports such as college basketball. In years to come, legislation and restrictions will likely ease, which means higher levels of competition for social sportsbooks in this space.
How To Sign Up for a Social Sportsbook
You may not be a current user of any social sportsbook site, so if you are interested in joining one, here are some simple steps for signing up.
- Find a social sportsbook that suits you. It is essential to look around and consider your options to ensure it is a site you enjoy.
- Once you decide on a site, you must register an account. This is a simple process; typically, there is a ‘sign up’ or ‘join now’ function. You must provide your name, D.O.B., email address, and ID verification here.
- As a new user, you may have welcome offers to claim. Being rewarded with welcome offers is very typical for a new user.
- Start playing. Using your rewards, you can start playing and looking at the markets the social sportsbook offers.
Final Thoughts
Revolutionizing an entire sport is challenging and only happens after some time. So, the likelihood of social sportsbooks doing that in 2024 is low. They could take some significant steps towards it and change the level of engagement with the sport. Targeting a younger demographic and increasing engagement is one way to gain more attention. After that, legal and ethical considerations will be made. Regulations are strict in the US, and it can be challenging to navigate through them. If social sportsbooks such as Rebet can do this, then there is no reason they cannot revolutionize the sport in the next few years. The real revolution might come over time as these platforms grow in popularity and the legal and cultural acceptance of sports betting on college athletics continues to evolve.
