Kalshi is making a move to roll out perpetual futures contracts for gold, silver, and platinum by filing an application with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). This will be the first expansion of perpetual contracts beyond cryptocurrency.
So, what happens now? Well, the CFTC has a 45-day window, during which they will review and then either approve or reject the application. If successful, traders will be permitted to buy, sell, and trade contracts relating to metals 24 hours a day. Just like the contracts for cryptocurrencies at the moment, they will essentially never end.
As of right now, Kalshi is in full waiting mode, as they wait to hear whether or not their application has been successful. The prediction market site is seeking approval by the CFTC to offer perpetual futures contracts in gold, silver, and platinum. Why? With the competition in US derivatives increasing, Kalshi is looking at new ways to stay ahead of the competition.
So, what does this mean for Kalshi and for traders? Quite simply, this will mean that the contracts don’t expire, so that traders can buy contracts around the clock.
If the application is approved, there would be an initial setup of these contracts being open for trading 24 hours a day, five days a week. While it’s not quite 24/7, it’s a step in the right direction. Kalshi may then look to extend the trading hours in the future, but it would most likely depend on how successful the 24/5 ratio works.
If you’re new to perps, the idea is simple. Essentially, they are contracts that don’t expire. Instead, you can make predictions without a looming deadline. So, if you think a price is going to go up, you go long. Unlike a standard contract where you are locked into a set price and on a specific date, a perp has no expiry date. You can hold your contract for as long as you want, only selling it when you are ready.
To get you up to speed, here’s how perpetual contracts would work at Kalshi and any other site on our list of prediction markets:
| Metals Included: | Gold, Silver, and Platinum |
| Expiration: | No expiration - continuous trading |
| Trading Hours: | Initially, 24 hours over five days a week |
| Application Status: | The CFTC will review the application over 45 days |
Kalshi has already introduced perps for cryptocurrencies, where traders can buy event contracts 24 hours a day. In a bid to extend this, Kalshi has applied to the CFTC for permission to offer perpetual contracts for metals, including gold, silver, and platinum. If the application is approved, Kalshi will trial the perps on a Monday to Friday basis. If all goes well, Kalshi might look into extending it further.
