The UK’s 1.1% Statutory Gambling Levy applies to licensed operators’ gross gambling yields for 2026–27.
Rising tax obligations may pressure casino profitability, promotional budgets, and market competition.
Levy funds support gambling-harm research (20%), prevention (30%), and treatment (50%).
Unfortunately for casino operators, the UK government is introducing yet another tax. The 1.1% Statutory Gambling Levy applies to the 2026–27 fiscal year, and UK regulators calculate everyone’s tax duty based on gross gambling yields (GGY).

Introduced on April 6, 2025, the Statutory Gambling Levy funds research, prevention and treatment of gambling-related harm. The Gambling Commission collects it from every licensed UK online casino at 1.1% of gross gambling yield.
Key Details:
Levy: 1.1%
Applicable Period: 2026–27
Calculation: Based on gross gambling yields (GGY)
Purpose: Funding for research, prevention and treatment of gambling-related harm
The 1.1% levy affects online casinos' operating costs. They must set aside money to meet this obligation, which affects every operator’s profitability and marketing budget.
The financial impact is significant when operators must meet multiple tax obligations. The fear here is that UK casinos will have to shut down and leave the market, affecting players and workers in the industry.
The levy funds research (20%), prevention (30%) and treatment (50%), distributed to bodies including UKRI, OHID and NHS England.
The Gambling Commission collects and administers the levy under the strategic direction of the UK government, and DCMS ministers direct how the funding is distributed.
Treatment receives the largest share of the funding, at 50%. Regulators are trying to streamline initiatives that benefit at-risk populations. Remember, however, that these are desirable outcomes and not what’s actually been achieved.
Running a business, let alone a gambling operation, is already difficult. Operators must pay the 1.1% Statutory Gambling Levy.
Protecting profit margins will require operators to reduce what they can back give to players. Bonuses and rewards become scarce, which greatly affects the online gaming experience. This also means that casinos can’t really cater to players and give them what they want.
Pressure to remain profitable shouldn’t be merciless, and we'd like to see every operator's tax obligation scaled back. But again, the government’s economic directives are very different here, with an emphasis on reducing harm to the players.
