Earlier this year, State Delegate Vanessa Atterbeary proposed House Bill 17 to the Maryland House of Delegates, and the bill is currently at the committee stage of the legislative process. The bill, titled “Internet Gaming - Authorization and Implementation,” seeks to authorize the State Lottery and Gaming Control Commission (SLGCC) to license qualified online casinos in Maryland and regulate their operations.
The bill is expected to pass through the committee stage easily, as State Delegate Vanessa Atterbeary, the original sponsor of House Bill 17, also chairs the Ways and Means Committee, which is currently overseeing its review. Afterwards, the bill will be scaled through further readings in the House of Delegates before it’s passed to the Senate for similar legislative action. If it passes, we’ll likely see some of the US’s best online casinos in Maryland next year.
House Bill 17 is not the first attempt by the Maryland General Assembly to legalize online casinos in Maryland. In 2024, Senators Ron Watson and Nancy King co-sponsored Senate Bill 603 seeking to legalize online casino and poker. The bill understandably got significant pushback from casino unions and lobbyists, stalling in the legislature before it even went to a referendum.
However, while online casinos remain unavailable in Maryland, sweepstakes casinos operating a dual virtual currency model are very much alive, even surviving a recent ban attempt by the state’s legislature.
