Both retail and mobile Missouri sports betting will be available by December 1, 2025
The law provides for up to 13 retail locations and as many as 21 mobile betting apps
Retail sportsbooks will likely have tethered mobile skins
Missouri sports betting will go live on December 1, 2025, opening up the market for both retail betting and mobile betting. The legislation that makes this all possible is the voter-approved sports betting law, Amendment 2.
Legal sports betting is new territory for gamblers in the Show Me state. That's why I've put together this article to tell you all you need to know about these sports betting formats that are soon to launch. Keep reading to find out how retail and mobile betting work, their main features and advantages, and what to expect when the market launches.
Retail betting means going to a physical sportsbook establishment to place sports bets. It's often called in-person betting and is the traditional way of betting.
Mobile betting, on the other hand, means placing bets via your phone or tablet. Mobile betting is the most common kind of online betting in the United States. Nowadays, it's simply the most popular way to bet. This is mainly because it allows you to bet wherever you are, either at home or on the go.
Missouri legalized sports betting in November 2024, following a statewide referendum where locals voted in favor of the sports betting bill, Amendment 2. For now, you can't legally bet in Missouri, but you can do so from your home or visit any of the physical locations when the market eventually opens up its doors in December. Unlike nearby Tennessee, which only has online betting, Missouri will regulate both retail and online sports betting.
There are 13 riverboat casinos in the state, which will serve as possible retail sportsbook locations. Mobile betting in Missouri has more potential options. Any operator with a retail location will likely have a mobile offering, too. At least, that's usually the case. In addition to 13 operators tied to casinos, the amended law provides for 6 operators partnered with local sports teams and 2 "untethered" betting sites. So, up to 21 mobile sportsbook apps may go live in the state.
For both formats, the minimum wagering age is 21, and you must be physically located within state lines to bet. It's expected that Missourians will be able to bet on all major leagues, including the NFL, NHL, NBA, and MLB. There's a good chance collegiate sports betting will be available, as well as other common betting sports like golf, tennis, etc.
One of the licensing requirements is that sportsbooks be tied to an existing casino establishment in the state. Missouri has 13 casinos that will either host their own proprietary betting solutions or partner with third-party betting brands. They include the following:
The plan also includes Missouri to allow in-stadium or stadium-adjacent sportsbook locations linked to licensed teams like the St. Louis Cardinals, Blues, and Kansas City Chiefs.
Missouri has legalized online sports betting, but there's no doubt that mobile betting will dominate. In the US now, online betting is synonymous with mobile betting. That's just because people use their phones more often than any other device.
The majority of US sportsbook companies have mobile-first offerings; some strictly provide a downloadable app that you can get from the App Store or Google Play Store. You can expect several mobile betting apps to launch on day one. I'm certain they'll have new customer bonuses ready for you to claim immediately as well.
| Retail | Online |
|---|---|
| Retail facilities provide large TVs and video walls where you can watch the game with others. | Lots of promos are available, starting from a dedicated welcome offer. |
| Physical sportsbooks offer additional entertainment, such as bars and restaurants. | You can take advantage of live betting and unique features like cashout. |
| They will be located within Missouri casinos, where you can also play casino games. | You can bet from wherever you are, whether at home or on the go. |
| It doesn't allow for plenty of promos like online platforms do. | It lacks the social aspect of watching and betting on the game with other enthusiasts. |
| Retail sportsbooks are a physical location that you need to journey to. | You will only need your phone. |
As I've highlighted in the earlier section, retail betting has its perks, and so does mobile betting. You don't have to choose one or the other. Download any mobile apps and start betting online on your favorite sports. If you visit a physical betting location, you can also get a printed physical ticket. Brands with retail locations will likely also have MO betting sites or apps. So, any rewards or loyalty points you earn can often be synced across both platforms. Some states require in-person registration before you can start betting virtually. The full details of Missouri's soon-to-launch betting market aren't available yet, so this may or may not be the case.
Nothing is confirmed yet as to which sportsbooks will get approval from the Missouri Gaming Commission. License applications are ongoing, and the finalized list of approved brands will be available by September 12, 2025. We likely won't get all 21 operators as soon as the market opens in December. Usually, only a few brands will be ready by launch day, but many others will join in as time goes on. Both retail and mobile betting will be available right away. However, as I pointed out, the setup will eventually allow for more mobile betting apps than retail sportsbook locations.
