Illinois Sports Betting Taxes and Per-Bet Fees

Illinois has changed its sports betting taxes twice in two years, and the second change shows up on bettors' slips:

• Graduated revenue tax (since July 1, 2024): Each sportsbook pays 20% on its first $30 million of yearly revenue, then 25%, 30% and 35% on higher bands, and 40% on revenue above $200 million. The original rate was a flat 15%.
• Per-wager tax (since July 1, 2025): Sportsbooks pay 25 cents on each of their first 20 million online bets in a year and 50 cents on every bet after that.
• Chicago city tax (since January 1, 2026): Sportsbooks pay an extra 10.25% on revenue from online bets placed inside Chicago.

Most big sportsbooks pass some of the per-wager tax on to bettors. FanDuel brought back a 50-cent fee on qualifying bets in October 2026; straight bets of $25 or more, parlays of $10 or more and bets placed with bonus bets are exempt. DraftKings also charges a per-bet fee, and other sportsbooks use small fees or higher minimum bets instead. The fee appears in the bet slip before you confirm, so check it, and consider fewer, larger bets rather than many small ones.

Illinois Sports Betting by the Numbers

The Illinois Gaming Board publishes figures for every sportsbook each month. July 2026, the latest month with official figures, was boosted by the World Cup:

Over the 2026 fiscal year, from July 2025 to June 2026, Illinois bettors wagered more than $15 billion across more than 319 million bets, about 99% of them online, and the state collected $593 million in sports betting tax.

DraftKings Illinois

DraftKings is Illinois' biggest sportsbook, with 36.4% of July handle. It has one of the deepest prop menus for Bears, Bulls, Cubs, White Sox and Blackhawks games, plus Same Game Parlay and SGP+ tools and fast live betting. Its retail sportsbook is at Casino Queen in East St. Louis; it stopped taking bets at its Wrigley Field sportsbook at the end of May 2026, citing the cost of operating in Illinois.

FanDuel Illinois

FanDuel is Illinois' second-biggest sportsbook. Its app is fast and its Same Game Parlay builder is one of the easiest to use. Note its 50-cent fee on smaller bets: it doesn't apply to straight bets of $25 or more or parlays of $10 or more.

Bet365 Illinois

Bet365 had 5.8% of Illinois handle in July. Its in-play betting is among the best in the US, and it's strong on soccer, which matters for Chicago Fire fans and World Cup-season bettors.

Fanatics Sportsbook is Illinois' third-biggest sportsbook, with 8.5% of July handle, and it runs retail sportsbooks at Argosy Casino Alton and Hawthorne Race Course. Its rewards come as FanCash, which you can turn into bonus bets or spend on Bears, Bulls and Cubs gear.

Other Illinois Sportsbooks

BetRivers took Illinois' first online bet in June 2020 and is linked to Rivers Casino Des Plaines, the state's first retail sportsbook. Hard Rock Bet launched in August 2024 and runs the sportsbook at Hard Rock Rockford, theScore Bet took over from ESPN Bet in December 2025, and Circa runs the sportsbook at American Place in Waukegan.

How to Sign Up With an Illinois Sportsbook

Illinois Sports Betting Laws

Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed the Sports Wagering Act on June 28, 2019. Rivers Casino Des Plaines took the first legal bet on March 9, 2020, and BetRivers launched online betting on June 18, 2020. For much of the first two years, new customers had to register in person at a casino, until remote sign-up returned for good on March 5, 2022.

• Age: You must be 21 or older.
• Location: You must be physically in Illinois to bet online, but you don't have to live there.
• College betting: You can't bet on Illinois college teams, such as Illinois, Northwestern, DePaul and Loyola Chicago. An exception that allowed some in-person bets on them ended in 2024. A bill to lift the ban (HB 4063) has been stuck in committee since May 2025.
• Advertising: Since August 1, 2025, sportsbooks can't advertise on college campuses or in student media.
• Daily fantasy sports: From January 1, 2027, DFS operators need an Illinois license and pay a 15% tax, under the budget signed in June 2026.
