Best NHL Bets for today’s games: +EV NHL betting markets

Your NHL bets don't need to skate on thin ice. Stay ahead of every opening faceoff with the best bets on the NHL schedule, determined by cold hard analytics.

Here at Dimers we analyze the data and identify the bets worth making by focusing on value against the price, where the odds offer a better return than they should.

It’s what's known as “positive expected value,” or “+EV,” where the potential winning result is more likely than the implied probability of a bookmaker’s price.

We built a data model that uses statistical analysis and machine learning to estimate the probability of NHL moneylines, total goals, and puck lines. The model then compares those likelihoods against sportsbook odds and prediction market prices to find +EV bets that have been priced in your favor.

We measure the gap between our probability and the implied probability of the odds or price, and it’s what we call the “edge.” Every edge isn't automatically a best bet, either. We apply a minimum +EV threshold to our Best Bets, shrinking the range to the markets with both a strong probability and attractive price.

Our +EV system doesn’t guarantee winning bets; it’s simply designed so you can consistently find value instead of trying to guess the future.

Check the table above for today's NHL Best Bets for the strongest +EV opportunities on the ice this week.

NHL Best Bets tonight: What to check before puck drop

The NHL plays most nights from October through April, and almost every game starts in the evening, so tonight's NHL best bets are usually the whole board. It updates throughout the day, and the closer you get to game time, the more the prices behind each edge have moved.

Two things are worth checking on a night slate before you take a bet:

  • The confirmed starting goaltender: Starters are usually announced on game day, often late, and a backup changes the picture on the moneyline, the puck line, and the total at once. This is the input most likely to land after a pregame price is set.
  • The second night of a back-to-back: A team playing its second game in two nights is the most common reason a starter sits, and the schedule is easy to check before you bet.

What makes an NHL Best Bet? The Dimers edge

Only NHL bets with integrity become Dimers Best Bets.

Our hockey machine-learning model examines every NHL matchup across moneyline, puck line, and total (over/under) markets and generates probabilities for each result.

This determines what is statistically the most likely result and what the price implies is most likely.

That difference is the edge percentage, which measures how much value a bet offers. That’s the Dimers edge: a quick and easy +EV betting shortlist. An NHL bet must pass our +EV minimum before it’s officially a Best Bet.

Some NHL Best Bets make us pay extra attention, so we flag them with our value signals:

  • Sweet Spot: Bets within particular edge ranges that have produced positive ROI over a sample size.
  • High Edge: A substantial gap between the probability and price.
  • Caution: The difference is perhaps too high, and it should be approached with due diligence.

Why positive expected value (+EV) is important for NHL betting

Picking winners is essentially a flick of the puck, and it’s the short game. Positive expected value (+EV) is a forward-looking strategy of playing for value.

  • Proven advantage over odds: An edge rating is a conclusive method for knowing if a bet has been priced too high or low.
  • Objective decision-making by default: You’re not making bets based on vibes or emotions. Logic is steady and repeatable.
  • Long-term returns: Luck and variance can affect individual picks, while +EV bets are designed to be profitable over time.

There are 84 games during the NHL regular season. A bet can lose, but with a repeatable process behind it based on value, you can be confident that you're making betting decisions based on profit over time.

How Dimers finds NHL Best Bets

Our NHL machine-learning model was designed from the ground up to hunt +EV NHL bets. It starts with a simple question: how many goals is each team likely to score?

Rather than predicting just one final score, the model estimates the probability of each team scoring from 0 through 10 goals in an upcoming matchup. That gives us a full picture of the possible scoring outcomes before a single pair of skates hits the rink.

What goes into the model:

  • Goals scored and conceded: Historical scoring data helps the model understand how often teams score and how often they allow goals.
  • Shooting and save percentage: The model considers how efficiently teams convert their chances and how well they prevent opponents from scoring.
  • Recent form and longer-term trends: The model weighs short-term results against longer-term performance, considering both current form and broader trends.
  • Opponent: The opposing team is factored into the projection, putting each team's numbers in the context of who they're facing.
  • Home or away: The location of the game is included, accounting for the difference between playing at home and on the road.
  • Days of rest: The model considers how much rest each team has had since its previous game.
  • Overtime and shootouts: The model accounts for the probability of a game going to overtime and, if necessary, a shootout. It also factors in the different overtime rules used in the regular season and playoffs.

Once those inputs are processed, the model produces a goal distribution for each team, estimating the probability of scoring 0 through 10 goals. We combine those probabilities to calculate the moneyline, puck line, and total probabilities.

Those probabilities are then compared with sportsbook prices to identify potential edges and, where the relevant criteria are met, Dimers Best Bets.

The model is designed to estimate probabilities, not predict every game perfectly. A 60% probability still means the outcome doesn't happen 40% of the time.

NHL betting tips for using the Best Bets board

The Best Bets board gives you the model's probability, the sportsbook price and the resulting edge. A few things are worth keeping in mind when you're looking at the numbers.

  • The price matters as much as the pick: The edge is calculated against a specific price. Free users see the price used for the Best Bet, while Dimers Pro members can click Compare to see odds and edge across sportsbooks and prediction markets.
  • Every price has a breakeven point: A -110 price needs to win 52.4% of the time to break even, while -150 needs to win 60%. The model's probability can be compared with that implied probability to see where the edge comes from.
  • Edge doesn't tell the whole story: A five-point edge on a +140 underdog and a five-point edge on a -300 favorite represent very different prices and hit rates. The edge shows the gap between the model and the market; the price tells you more about the potential return.
  • Puck lines work differently: NHL puck lines are typically set at 1.5 goals, so the price tends to move more than the handicap itself. A team at +1.5 covers by winning outright or losing by one, which can create a significant difference between its puck line and moneyline prices.
  • Empty-net goals can change the result late: A game sitting under the total for most of the night can move over in the final minutes when a team pulls its goalie. The same late goal can also affect a puck line, particularly in a close game.
  • Prices can vary between sportsbooks: A difference of just a few cents on a moneyline can materially change the implied probability and therefore the edge. Our NHL Odds lets you compare available prices across sportsbooks.

Wayne Gretzky didn't chase the puck, and disciplined bettors don't chase losses.

The NHL plays most nights of the week, and a busy slate means you have a lot of games to choose from. Set a limit before the action gets underway and stay inside it. Treat a losing bet as money spent rather than something to win back in the late game, and only ever bet what you can afford to lose.

What are NHL Best Bets?

A Dimers NHL Best Bet is a pick with a minimum +EV (positive expected value) edge rating, where our data model's probability is meaningfully higher than the probability implied by a sportsbook or prediction market price. We analyze every hockey game on the schedule, compare each number against the market, and the bets with the largest gaps make the board. Every one shows the market, the price, our probability, and the edge. Free users are limited to three per day; the full board is only available to Dimers Pro members.
