College Football Week 2 - #10 Iowa vs. #9 Iowa State: Betting picks, predictions and odds

College Football continues this weekend, with Iowa vs. Iowa State kicking off the Week 2 CFB action. Here, Ian Gold previews the big game from a betting point of view.

Quarterback Michael Penix returned the conquering hero for Indiana, bringing back with him two top targets in Ty Fryfogle and Peyton Hendershot, raising expectations in Bloomington and sparking an era of hype the Hoosiers don’t often see on the Gridiron.

One game against the Iowa Hawkeyes, and it’s β€œwhen does basketball season start?”

Now Iowa is getting 4.5 points against in-state rival Iowa State and star quarterback Brock Purdy, and it seems the odds for the Cyhawk trophy are slanted the wrong way. Iowa State was a trendy pick to find its way into the College Football Playoff (rolls eyes), and need this game to stake their claim, but will be fighting uphill against a more physical Hawkeye roster that typically limits mistakes better than anyone this side of the New England Patriots.

When you think of it, the state of Iowa and its relative talent base have no business being ranked in the Top-10. But here we are, and both are proving grounds for what can happen with a fantastic coach, program, and stability. Matt Campbell turned Iowa State around onto solid footing and attracted a kid like Purdy to lead the balanced offense. Iowa on the other hand had the most NFL lineman out of any program in the country. And while Tristan Wirfs dominates the Tampa Bay Bucs right side, current Iowa center Tyler Linderbaum sets the tone as the strongest and nastiest.

But offenses aren’t going to tell the tale in Ames this weekend. Iowa managed to limit the explosive Indiana offense to 6 points and 233 total yards last week, returning two interceptions for touchdowns and pressuring the mobile Penix into happy feet and mistakes. At the same time, Iowa State was squeaking out a marginal win against Northern Iowa and scoring 16 points total. Of course, football isn’t a game of the transitive property, but can’t help but notice how week 1 shook out for these two teams.

Week 2 pits these two teams against each other where emotions will run extremely high and just about anything can happen, but the wrong team is favored, and for that I’ll take Iowa and the points.
