New Jersey's market is mature, and 2026 has been a little quieter than 2025: bettors wagered $8.30 billion from January to September 2026, down 4.1% on the same months last year. These are the latest official figures from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, alongside the full year for 2025:

New Jersey Sports Betting Laws

New Jersey spent six years fighting the federal ban on sports betting, and the US Supreme Court ruled in its favor in Murphy v. NCAA in May 2018. The state's sports wagering law followed on June 11, 2018, and the first legal bets were taken at Monmouth Park and Borgata three days later. DraftKings opened online betting in August 2018.

• Age: You must be 21 or older.
• Location: You must be physically in New Jersey to bet online, but you don't have to live there.
• College betting: You can't bet on New Jersey college teams, such as Rutgers and Seton Hall, wherever they play, or on college games played in New Jersey. Voters rejected a change to allow in-state college bets in November 2021. Player props on other college games are allowed for now, but a 2026 bill (S1170) would ban them.
• Tax: The online sportsbook tax rose from 13% to 19.75% on July 1, 2025. Retail sportsbooks pay 8.5%.
• Responsible gambling rules: In October 2026, New Jersey adopted rules that require online sportsbooks to name a responsible gambling lead, review accounts that hit warning signs such as large deposits, and stop sending promotions to at-risk players.
