Americans are betting on sports more than ever before with Super Bowl LV expected to generate the largest legal handle for a single event in American sports betting history according to the American Gaming Association.
More than 23 million Americans are planning to bet on this year’s NFL Championship decider which includes an expected handle of $4.3 billion.

The main reason behind this expected record-smashing event is the introduction of legalized online sports gambling into more states. Since last year’s game, an additional 36 million Americans have gained access to legal online sportsbooks in their home state, and the shift is starting to turn away from illegal bets made in back alleys and bars.
“With a robust legal market, Americans are abandoning illegal bookies and taking action into the regulated marketplace in record numbers,” said AGA President and CEO Bill Miller.
With 25 states now legally operating online sportsbooks, these kinds of numbers are only the tip of the iceberg. More than $21 billion was wagered on sports in 2020, up from $13 billion in 2019. As more states look to increase tax revenue as a result of damaged local economies due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2021 could prove to be yet another banner year for the gambling industry.
