Patriots vs. Bears Thursday Night Football preview

New England has won three straight since a 1-2 start. Its latest win was 26-19 over the Jets, and Maye has thrown an NFL-best 10 touchdown passes over that stretch, with just one interception after a league-high six in the first three weeks. The Patriots are also getting thin. Romeo Doubs, their leading receiver while A.J. Brown was on IR is now on injured reserve himself with a shoulder injury. They’ve ruled three cornerbacks in this game: Carlton Davis III, Karon Prunty and Channing Canada.

Chicago got Williams back from a three-game hamstring absence last week, and he went 30-of-36 for 305 yards in a 31-23 win over Atlanta. His 72.5% completion rate leads the league.

The Bears’ defense ranks seventh in yards allowed, but that number hides some leaks. Chicago gives up 6.0 yards per play, the second-most in the NFL, and ranks 29th in EPA on first and second down. Montez Sweat also serves the second game of his two-game suspension on Thursday, so they'll be without an imporant piece of their pass rush.

The market makes Chicago a 3.5-point home favorite, with the Bears -150 and Patriots +150 on the moneyline and a game total of 50.5 points.

Our model gives the Bears a 61.9% win probability and projects a 26-23 Chicago win.

Our Patriots vs. Bears same game parlay picks

Even though it's to the under, offense should be plenty based on our model projecting 49 points, and both defenses carry real cracks into a short week, so this SGP goes after the passing games on both sides.

As always, every leg is backed by our NFL player projections.

Leg 1: Hunter Henry 30+ receiving yards

The data case: Henry has gone over 30 receiving yards in four of six games, and in each of the last three (62, 44 and 48). He’s also scored in back-to-back weeks, including the game-winning touchdown against the Jets.

He’s not a big-yardage tight end. He has finished under 50 yards in five of six games, so we’re not chasing a ceiling here, just three or four catches from a tight end who has seen at least four targets in four straight games. With Doubs out, there are fewer proven targets for Maye in the middle of the field as A.J. Brown should realistically work primarily in bigger pass plays with Doubs' team-best air yards now vacated.

The Dimers model projects Henry for 37.3 receiving yards on 3.1 receptions, which leaves a comfortable cushion over the 30-yard line.

Leg 2: DeMario Douglas 40+ receiving yards

The data case: Douglas’s season looks a lot better once you split it in two. Across Weeks 1-4 he had nine catches for 82 yards. In the last two weeks he has 11 catches on 13 targets for 151 yards and three touchdowns, including 7-of-8 for 86 yards and a score against the Jets.

That jump lines up with New England losing receivers. Doubs and Mack Hollins are both on IR, and A.J. Brown caught just three of 10 targets for 27 yards in his return from injury last week, with drops part of the problem. Douglas has become Maye’s most reliable intermediate option. He’s a good fit against a Chicago defense that allows the second-most yards per play in the league.

The Dimers model projects Douglas for 43.3 receiving yards on 3.3 catches, behind only Brown among Patriots receivers.

Leg 3: Luther Burden III 60+ receiving yards

The data case: Burden has hit 60 receiving yards in three of his last four games (61, 63 and 95), and four times this year, with four or more catches in each. He did most of that with Williams sidelined, but notably caught all 13 targets sent his way in Williams' two healthy games.

This is the tightest leg of the three, but the matchup supports it. The Patriots allow 209 passing yards per game, 11th in the league, yet they’ll be without three cornerbacks Thursday, and safeties Kevin Byard III and Craig Woodson are both questionable.

The Dimers model projects Burden for 61.0 receiving yards, the most of any Bears pass-catcher and ahead of Rome Odunze (49.6) and Colston Loveland (44.9).
