Lions vs. Bills Thursday Night Football preview

Both these teams enter Week 2 on short rest after narrowly escaping upsets in Week 1. Josh Allen engineered a late-game comeback over the Texans, while the Lions just barely escaped in OT against the Saints after New Orleans failed to convert a 2PT try.

The Bills will look to win the first game played in their new stadium and are favored to do so at 66.2% but we do give the Lions the advantage on the 5.5-point spread at 53.2%. 

A high total of 54.5 gets a 54.7% chance to go under, but our average final projected score of 29-24 leaves plenty of room for offense.

Initial predictions identify an edge in the game total, with best odds near even money.

Leg 1: Sam LaPorta 4+ receptions

The data case: He didn't rack up big yardage in Week 1, but TE Sam LaPorta hauled in 5 of his 8 targets for 48 yards.

Injuries have cut LaPorta's seasons short in his four-year career, but he's an important piece of this offense and a reliable one in key spots; he's recorded under 4 receptions just once in four playoff appearances, and before his season was cut short in 2025, hit this in 6 of 9 games, with 5+ in all but one of those.

He projects as the Lions' third receiving option in this game at 47.5 yards on 4.3 receptions.

Buffalo allowed 4 catches and 35 yards on 8 targets (second most) to Texans TE Dalton Schultz in Week 1.

Leg 2: DJ Moore 60+ receiving yards

The data case: We spent virtually all of last week hyping up the offseason signing of DJ Moore by the Bills and while it was a quiet first quarter, the pairing of Moore and Allen came up big in Week 1, resulting in a 5-catch, 100-yard performance with a 43-yard burner for a touchdown.

Moore now gets a Lions defense that allowed the most passing yards in Week 1, over 400 yards to Saints QB Tyler Shough. Both Moore and Dalton Kincaid tallied 100+ yards for the Bills against a far superior defensive unit in the Texans, and three players project for 50+ receiving yards tonight for Buffalo.

Leading them all is DJ Moore, also the only one projected for over 60 at 66.4 yards per the Dimers model.

Leg 3: Jahmyr Gibbs to score 2+ TDs

The data case: The Offensive Player of the Year favorite, Jahmyr Gibbs opened the season with 186 total yards and a pair of touchdowns, hauling in all five of his targets through the air.

He's the Dimers model's favorite to score across all of Week 1, the only player over 7-% to do so, and more than 10% higher than the next player, Derrick Henry. He's at 35.7% to score twice, an 11.5% advantage over the next player.

The Bills made moves to improve their rushing defense in the offseason; none of that was on display in Week 1, as they allowed 3 touchdowns and 102 yards to running backs, led by David Montgomery.

At his opening odds of +185, Gibbs carried a Dimers edge on bet365; while those odds have dropped, he anchors our boosted parlay thanks to his league-leading probability to score twice.
