Will Zalatoris Amongst the Most Popular Players in US Open Golf Betting

A player who has never won a men’s golf major has caught the eye of bettors with the sportsbooks on the US Open.

On the heels of a playoff loss to Justin Thomas at last month’s PGA Championship, Will Zalatoris has attracted the most money and wagers among entrants at the Open, which started today in Brookline, Mass.

Zalatoris, 25, accounts for 11 percent of the handle and 6.5 percent of wagers. His odds are +2800, 10th shortest in the field.

The Masters winners Scottie Scheffler, who disappointed as the PGA favorite by failing to make the cut, represents 6.1 percent of the money and six percent of bets.

Even bigger names occupy the next two spots.

Thomas (+1100) is third in handle at 5.8 percent and fourth in tickets at 4.5 percent. Rory McIlroy (+900), fresh off a victory at the RBC Canadian Open and the favorite this week, holds down third place on wagers at 4.9 percent and fourth for money at 5.1 percent.

Zalatoris, who has missed two cuts in three previous Open appearances, has also attracted the largest wager: $4,000. The bettor would pocket $112,000 if Zalatoris wins this week.

Two plays for $3,000 have been logged: Brooks Koepka (+4500) to win $135,000 and Sungjae Im (+4000) to win $120,000.
