There Has Never Been a Better Time to Be a Boston Sports Fan

“Spoiled.”  This is the one word that may come to a person’s mind when thinking about Boston sports fans over the past two decades. Most cities in the United States aren’t lucky enough to have a team from one of the four major sports leagues, let alone see one of them win at least one championship since 2001. Since 2001, Boston has seen its teams win a combined twelve championships (six Super Bowls, four World Series, one Stanley Cup, and one NBA Championship). However, even though the city has seen their teams thrive for this long, 2023 may just be the best time to be a Boston sports fan. The Boston Bruins and Boston Celtics have had amazing regular seasons to this point, with both being top contenders in each of their respective leagues.

Coming off their loss to the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals, the Celtics picked right back up where they left off.  Start small forward Jayson Tatum has been one of the favorites for the NBA Most Valuable Player Award throughout the entirety of the season. Dimers.com’s data-led probability system shows that the Celtics are second only to the Denver Nuggets as the most likely team to take home the NBA championship this season.

On top of the Celtics’ success during the 2022-2023 NBA season thus far, the Bruins have had quite the season in their own right. With the team’s captain and leader, Patrice Bergeron opting to re-sign with the squad, and David Krejci’s return from the Czech Republic, the Bruins have embraced “the last dance” ideology. The team is on track to break the NHL’s win record of 62.  The Bruins are currently on pace for 65 wins, and a total of 136 points. They are +400 to win the Stanley Cup with DraftKings Sportsbook and, according to our model, a 20.4% chance to win the title.

The team’s historical amount of success didn’t lead its management group to stay complacent at the trade deadline either. The Bruins were one of the most aggressive teams at this year’s NHL trade deadline, adding players like Dmitry Orlov, Garnet Hathaway, and Tyler Bertuzzi. Moves such as these show the team’s commitment to the “Cup or bust” mentality, and have shown immediate returns. Through five games with the black and gold, Orlov has scored three goals and six assists for a total of nine points. Hathaway has been great on the penalty kill, while also providing some offense on the fourth line with two assists since joining the club. Bertuzzi has already proven to be a great fit with new linemate Charlie Coyle, assisting Coyle’s goal against the New York Rangers in his first game at TD Garden this past Saturday.

The Bruins opting to make these moves not only improves their team, but it also counteracts some of the trades that their biggest competitors in the Eastern Conference made at the trade deadline as well. The New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs were two teams in particular who made a lot of noise at the deadline. The Rangers acquired star wingers Patrick Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko, while the Maple Leafs brought in former Conn Smythe (Stanley Cup Playoffs MVP Award) winner Ryan O’Reilly.

Perhaps the cherry on top in all of this is the fact that sports betting has launched in Massachusetts on Friday, March 10. The betting apps that will be available are DraftKings Sportsbook, FanDuel Sportsbook, WynnBet, Caesars, Barstool, and BetMGM. I think sports betting in Massachusetts will be very successful because of how loyal the fans are, and the amount of success Boston’s teams are currently having. Especially with the long playoff runs that are expected for both the Bruins and Celtics, fans will definitely be excited to get betting on their favorite teams.
