The Phils gambled yesterday with the starting pitcher matchup but came out on top, thanks to their power hitters and their bullpen, who kept San Diego to just 2 runs once starting pitcher Bailey Falter was removed in the first inning. It really was an all-team performance from Philly (with Falter excepted), and this team is looking seriously good - almost like they could potentially give the Astros a run for their money in the World Series, assuming Houston also take care of business against the Yankees today.

The decision to put Falter in means that it afforded an extra day of rest for today's starter, Zack Wheeler. The pitcher was the star performer in Game 1 of this series, throwing 7 scoreless innings in just 83 pitches with 8 strikeouts. He matches up against the same foe from the series opener, Yu Darvish of the Padres, who wasn't disgraced in his own right, but did allow the only 2 runs of the game as the Phillies triumphed.

It's becoming evident that the stars are aligning for the Phillies. Their pitching is better all the way through - especially in their bullpen where they are putting up a 2.04 ERA, compared with San Diego's 4.41. Having Schwarber, Harper and Hoskins in form with a locked in pitching rotation is a scary prospect. They've got it all going for them right now.
