New York Jets 2022 Win Total Prediction, Computer Picks and Super Bowl Odds

New York Jets 2022 Win Total Prediction, Computer Picks and Super Bowl Odds

The 2022 NFL season is firmly on the horizon and over the coming weeks the Dimers crew will break down the chances of each and every team, all vying for Super Bowl 57 glory in Glendale, Arizona come February.

Let's take a look at the key factors to consider when betting on the New York Jets in 2022.

The Jets have added a pretty decent amount of talent in recent years, but they'll only go as far as second-year quarterback Zach Wilson takes them. If he takes a giant step forward, New York could be competitive this season. But his play last year was far from inspiring.

Can they avoid being in the NFL's basement once again?

New York Jets 2022 Win Total - 5.5

The rebuild in New York began a year ago with a new head coach (Robert Saleh) and franchise quarterback (Zach Wilson), and as expected the Jets endured plenty of growing pains on the road to a four-win season while losing more man-power games to injury than any other team.

Wilson, as many rookie signal-callers do, had some forgettable Sundays. He completed 55.6 percent of passes for 2,334 yards and 11 touchdowns with nine interceptions while suffering 44 sacks. He’s surrounded by much more talent, from Laken Tomlinson to rookie Garrett Wilson to CJ Uzomah, and is in position to take a considerable step in his second year.

“If any second-year quarterback will make the leap, I think it’ll be Zach Wilson,” NFL television analyst Cris Collinsworth said.

The Jets also need to make strides in the ground game and stopping the run. Last year, they had 14 rushing touchdowns and allowed 28. Michael Carter showed flashes as a rookie but it didn’t stop New York from making Iowa State product Breece Hall the first running back drafted at 36th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Gang Green will take a tour around the AFC North in an odd scheduling quirk, playing the Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers in their first four games. The Jets also visit the Green Bay Packers and Denver Broncos in October, making for a challenging opening half of the campaign.

PICK: Over 5.5 wins

DimersBOT: In our model's 10,000 simulations of the upcoming NFL season, the Jets averaged only 5.13 wins per year. So, while the writer of this piece likes New York to go Over, you might want to consider the Under. This team just isn't there yet and the schedule is daunting.

New York Jets X-Factor - C.J. Mosley, LB

It’s time for Mosley to deliver a monster year for the Jets after signing a five-year contract in 2019 with $43 million guaranteed. He missed almost all of his first season with Gang Green and even though he was mostly solid a year ago with 168 combined tackles, he struggled to adapt to Saleh’s system, with a 50.7 grade in coverage and a 31.0 grade in run defense, according to Pro Football Focus.

If Mosley can't find a way to turn in a good season, New York won't make the strides it's looking for on the defensive side of the ball. And if the Jets aren't better defensively this season, they're going to be picking towards the top of the 2023 NFL Draft.

New York Jets Super Bowl 57 Chances

Pump the brakes for at least another year. The Jets were unable to win a single game against their division rivals a year ago, and though improved on paper, are widely still considered the weakest team in the AFC East. If you feel daring, take a shot on the Jets to make the playoffs instead.

DimersBOT: Our model only has one team, the Houston Texans, rated worse than the Jets this season. You can find better ways to use your money than backing New York right now.
