Free MLB Picks for Saturday May 7, 2022

Pirates vs. Reds, 12:35PM ET

The rain yesterday not only gave the Reds a day off baseball, but is gave them a day off taking an L - something that had happened every day for the previous 9 days before yesterday. As we've outlined previously in this article, this team is reaching historic levels of terrible. There is some solace today, however, that at least they look to have the early advantage of the starting pitchers duel with Connor Overton (0-0, 1.69 ERA) on the mound for Cincy, while the Pirates will counter with JT Brubaker (0-2, 6.20 ERA). How that bodes for the early innings we'll have to wait and see, but what we do know is that both of these teams are extremely bad at defending runs, ranked last and 3rd last for opponent runs per game. Even if the Reds can keep the runs down to open things up, we may see the runs flow once the bullpens are deployed.

Tigers vs. Astros, 4:05PM ET

Despite winning both games of the weekend series so far, the Astros have really yet to dominate the 8-16 Tigers with a pair or 3-2 wins over the last 2 nights, but is that about to change? Houston will have a great opportunity to apply early scoring pressure with Detroit pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez (0-2, 5.33 ERA) starting on the bump this afternoon. Rodriguez has started 4 times this year, leaking enough runs through the opening innings to see every game that he's played in go over the run total set by the 'books. Houston haven't exactly been a dominant offensive threat this season, ranking 20th in runs per game, but they do know how to strangle their opponents, ranking 7th in the league for run defense. This is finally the game in the series that the 'stros show how good they are.

Cardinals vs. Giants, 7:15PM ET

Logan Webb will be starting for the Giants tonight, and while we love everything about him, he has allowed 3+ runs in each of his last 3 starts. After enjoying some success over San Francisco twice already this week, the Cardinals hitters will like their chances to attack. This total feels just a little too low.
