College Football Week 3 - Virginia vs. North Carolina: Betting picks, predictions and odds

College Football continues this weekend, with one of the highlights coming in the form of Virginia vs. North Carolina. Here, Ian Gold previews the big game from a betting point of view.

Unfortunately, I’m a fan of a team that gets beat on a lot. A lot. The latest beatdown was at the hands of the Virginia Cavaliers; a team that impressed on offense and defense, and should be able to stand up to ranked Carolina on the road.

Instead, the books have North Carolina as more than a touchdown favorite at home. And after watching Carolina play V-Tech, and Virginia host Illinois, I’m pretty certain UVA is the more talented and better-coached team playing this Saturday

First, Sam Howell is the guy that gets all the pub, and is STILL listed in the Top 10 of the 2022 NFL Draft but I don’t really see it. Watching him against Virginia Tech, you’d scoff at the idea he was an NFL prospect at all. And against a very underrated Virginia defense, he’s going to be harassed all day by a very strong and relentlessly shuffled defensive line that stays fresh. While the UVA defensive backs weren’t anything to write home about last week against Illinois, they did the job adequately enough to allow for the line to get pressure. Carolina’s offensive line will have to have made major strides in just a couple short weeks against the better team from Virginia.

On the other side of the football, Virginia has ATHLETES. Jelani Woods, A 6-7 monster tight end coming off a 122 yard performance is able to son defenders into submission. Billy Kemp IV, a lightning quick and competitive receiver that will touch the ball plenty and make guys miss. And quarterback Brennan Armstrong coming off a 405 yard and 5 TD performance, orchestrating the show and putting points on the board.

UNC is definitely getting points for the home field, but in conference, without a timezone difference and the Wine & Cheese crowd? How much is that actually worth against arguably a more experienced and better team. That Top-10 ranking, as Coach Mack Brown said, doesn’t mean much anymore.

Again, I love getting points with Virginia, but just like Iowa last week, and Illinois in Week 1, I’ll be sprinkling some dollars on the moneyline because I think UVA could win this one.
