Betting Preview for the 2022 Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix

With just three races remaining in the the 2022 season, F1’s traveling circus touches down in Mexico City this weekend, for the Mexican Grand Prix. Built in 1959, the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez hosted its first Formula 1 Grand Prix just four years later.

And it’s no wonder F1 was quick to the track. At just 2.67 miles, sitting at an elevation well over 7000 feet, AHR rarely fails to deliver phenomenal action, with teams forced to deal with the unique challenge of keeping an F1 race car cool, even as it travels 200 miles per hour at extreme altitude.

Our Dimers.com F1 expert takes a look at the best bets for the 2022 Mexican Grand Prix this weekend.

What’s at stake?

With the outcome of the Drivers’ and Constructors Cup championships done and dusted, the Mexican Grand Prix might seem a low stakes affair. For everyone besides Max Verstappen and Christian Horner, however, it’s anything but. Following Charles Leclerc’s brilliant showing last weekend in Austin, the Monegasque has edged two points ahead of Sergio Perez for second in the Drivers’ standings, while George Russell (3rd), Carlos Sainz (4th), and Lewis Hamilton (5th) are separated by a total of just 20 points in the battle for fourth. Meanwhile, Alpine will look to build on its six-point lead over McLaren for 4th place in the Constructor’s Cup, and the same for Alpha Romeo’s two-point lead over Aston Martin for 6th.

Mexican Grand Prix Best Bets

Leclerc edges out Perez again. Given Sergio Perez will be competing in his home grand prix, where he’s performed wonderfully throughout his career, it’s tempting to predict the Mexican will reverse last week’s outcome, in which Leclerc narrowly outscored him in Austin. The trouble is, Charles Leclerc has been on a tear, and Ferrari’s reliability issues seem a thing of the past. Look for another close call between the Perez and Leclerc, and don’t be surprised if they both podium, but bet on Leclerc to finish ahead of Perez.

Alpine outscores McLaren. Last week was a wild one for French automaker Alpine, with top driver Fernando Alonso becoming airborne mid-race, and still remaining in contention for a points finish, if not for a late penalty. While McLaren’s Lando Norris has looked characteristically excellent of late, Danny Riciardo has only been getting worse. Look for Alpine to outscore McLaren on Sunday, expanding their lead for 4th place in the Constructors Cup.

Verstappen wins, takes record for most victories in a season. As it’s been for weeks, predicting Max Verstappen will win almost feels superfluous, as the Dutchman’s pace is head and shoulders above the pack. In this case, however, there’s a record at stake: a Verstappen win in Mexico City would be his 14th of the season, the most in F1 history. While Verstappen has humbly minimized the importance of this record, correctly pointing out that Formula 1 seasons are longer than they used to be, so win-totals are hardly a barometer of one’s place in history, we can still count on the back-to-back champion to dominate at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, just as Verstappen’s done all season long.
