Betting Preview for the 2022 Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix
Last updated: | Published:Following a 35-year absence, the Dutch Grand Prix made its triumphant return in 2021. This weekend we’ll have Round 2 (or, if we’re including races run before 1986, Round 33) and at just 4.3 kilometers, Zandvoort Circuit is amongst the shortest tracks in F1.
Dimers.com F1 expert Mac Douglass takes a look at the best bets for the 2022 Dutch Grand Prix this weekend.
2022 Dutch F1 Grand Prix Preview
As we mentioned, Zandvoort Circuit is amongst the shortest tracks on the F1 calendar, and its sharp, notoriously speedy corners will force teams to adjust their suspensions in the interest of creating the downforce necessary to corner at high speeds. Given that Zandvoort’s short pit lane opens the door for three-stop strategies, fans can expect a wide array of tactics, and, by extension, a great deal of excitement and unpredictability in the race’s final laps.
What’s at stake?
While hometown hero Max Verstappen is likely to steal the show, there will be plenty to watch for down the grid. The battle for second place in the Constructors Cup is intensifying between Ferrari and Mercedes, and the Dutch Grand Prix will be a critical barometer of each team’s pace.
Further, F1’s just-concluded summer break brought a torrent of rumors regarding coming driver movement, and veterans such as McLaren’s Danny Riccardo and AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly, along with heralded up-and-comer Oscar Piastri, seem destined for new teams.
This should create even more intrigue in the middle and rear of the field, where practically everyone will be motivated to come out swinging, for fear of losing their 2023 seats.
F1 Dutch Grand Prix Best Bets
Verstappen to win (-170). Not only will defending Driver’s Cup champion Max Verstappen be driving before his home crowd, the Dutchman has won nine of 14 races in 2022, including the last three. Verstappen also won the Dutch Grand Prix last year, and shows no signs of slowing down.
Mercedes to outscore Ferrari. In recent races, Ferrari’s pace advantage against Mercedes has waned. Last week’s Belgian Grand Prix, at which the FIA rolled out new technical directives intended to level the playing field, was supposed to demonstrate whether Mercedes had closed that performance gap altogether. Then Lewis Hamilton DQed, and his Mercedes teammate George Russell finished 4th, splitting the difference between Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz (3rd) and Charles Leclerc (6th). As a result, Mercedes’ improved pace flew under the radar. Look for that to change in the Netherlands, with the German automaker scoring more total points than Ferrari, a trend likely to continue the rest of the year.
Pierre Gasly back in the points. While Gasly has underperformed in 2022, the former race winner was back in the points at Spa, and could not be more motivated to put in another strong showing, given his uncertain future. Add that Gasly’s AlphaTauri boasts the same Honda engine as Verstappen’s Red Bull, and you can see why we’re high on the Frenchman at Zandvoort.
