2023 Saudi Arabia Formula 1 Grand Prix: Betting Preview

Following a two-week break after the 2023 Formula 1 season’s inaugural grand prix in Bahrain, F1 returns this weekend with the third running of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Though Bahrain and Saudi Arabia sit close together on the map, the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian GPs have little more in common than hot weather. A blisteringly speedy road circuit, Jeddah has quickly developed a reputation as one of F1’s most dynamic raceways, with the circuit’s 27 corners representing the most on any Formula 1 racetrack in 2023. Further, tyre degradation projects to be less of an impediment in Saudi Arabia than on Bahrain’s tough asphalt, quite literally paving the way for high speed action all weekend. Here are our Best Bets for the 2023 Saudi Arabia Grand Prix.

What’s at stake?
Entering the 2023 F1 season, all signs pointed to another dominant campaign from Red Bull, and, specifically, back-to-back Drivers’ Cup Champion Max Vertstappen. Verstappen’s outrageously easy victory in Bahrain validated every rumor, and the rest of the field will now be desperate to erase at least a bit of the Dutchman’s pace advantage after a fortnight to regroup.
Jeddah will serve as the ideal barometer for whether this is a legitimate possibility: the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix places a higher premium on straight-line speed, which, theoretically, is one of the few areas in which Red Bull isn’t heads and shoulders above the pack.
While Red Bull remains the clear favorite to come out on top in Saudi Arabia, the battle between Ferrari, Mercedes, and Aston Martin this weekend will be fascinating, with Ferrari and Mercedes each reeling from internal controversy and performance, strategy, or reliability issues, and Aston Martin’s redesigned bullet of a racecar suddenly looking a genuine contender to join the vaunted ranks of Formula 1’s big three.

Verstappen’s pace advantage decreases, but he still wins. Though Max Verstappen might not manage to dominate so thoroughly in Saudi Arabia as he did in Bahrain, don’t expect anyone else to take first. With that said, don’t be shocked if one of the Ferraris, most likely that of Charles Leclerc, secures pole position.

Mercedes outscores Aston Martin. Last race we predicted Aston Martin to outscore Mercedes, which they did. On the surface it seems little has changed; however, with favorable conditions to Merc’s racecar and an utter void of expectations, Saudi Arabia feels primed for a better showing from Toto Wolff’s team, if not one likely to challenge Ferrari or Red Bull.
Haas bounces back, finishes in the points. Bahrain was a disaster for a Haas team that projected to be a solid mid-field competitor in 2023. Jeddah, by contrast, seems tailor made for Haas’ straight line speed. Look for Kevin Magnussen or Nico Hulkenberg to secure the American automaker’s first points of 2023.
