2023 Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix: Betting Preview

Formula 1 returns this weekend—and so does Danny Ricciardo—for the Hungarian Grand Prix. Nestled amid the picturesque landscapes of northeastern Budapest, the 4.381km Hungaroring stands as a testament to speed and precision. Drawing comparisons to the nimble agility of a karting circuit, the Hungaroring's character unfolds through its labyrinth of corners, leaving little room for lengthy straights. Here, speedsters harness Monaco-like levels of downforce while horsepower takes a backseat, at least relative to F1’s last outing at Silverstone. With the Hungarian Grand Prix representing Formula 1’s penultimate stop before the summer break, and a mass of fanfare sure to accompany Ricciardo’s return, Hungary 2023 will be one to remember.

Dimers.com F1 expert Mac Douglass takes a look at the best bets for the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix.

2023 Hungarian F1 Grand Prix Betting Preview

When?

Qualifier: Saturday, July 22, 10:00 am E.T.
Grand Prix: Sunday, July 23, 9:00 am E.T.

Where?

Hungaroring—Budapest, Hungary

What’s at stake?

Once again, the highest stakes action in Hungary is unlikely to include the battle for first place, as an already-dominant Max Verstappen will be debuting a new (some might even say, unnecessary) set of Red Bull upgrades. There will, however, be endless drama down the grid.

First up is the return of Danny Ricciardo, who is doubtful to sniff points in his sluggish Alpha Tauri, but will be eager to defeat teammate Yuki Tsunoda, thus laying the foundation of his case for a 2025 return to Red Bull.

Then comes the question of whether McLaren can maintain their remarkable upward trajectory, a prospect marred by Lando Norris’ pessimistic remarks about his team’s chances at a slow track like Hungoring.

All the while, Mercedes, Ferrari, and Aston Martin will continue their endless jockeying for position, all eager to claim the title of second fastest team on the grid.

Hungarian Grand Prix Best Bets

This was a winner for us last week—albeit at considerably longer odds—and plus money value means it’s time to run it back. Verstappen is an overwhelming favorite to win in Hungary, and Piastri’s fourth place showing at Silverstone indicates he’ll be a contending top-ten finisher every race from here out. Jump on Verstappen/Piastri before the odds get even shorter.

Max Verstappen wins and Oscar Piastri finishes in the points (+115 with FanDuel Sportsbook)

In the fastest car on the track, Sergio Perez has finished top six in every race but one this year: he should do so again in Hungary, in spite of recent struggles. Lando Norris has finished fourth and second in two outings since McLaren rolled out their game-changing upgrade package: he looks good for top six in Hungary, in spite of his defeatist remarks earlier this week. George Russell was on the Hungoring podium in 2022, and poised for a much better finish at Silverstone before a badly-timed safety car knocked him down to seventh: he’s a solid third leg, and significant boost of value.

George Russell, Lando Norris, Sergio Perez all finish top six (+172 with FanDuel Sportsbook)

If anyone besides Verstappen wins this weekend, it will almost certainly be Sergio Perez, meaning this is essentially +185 odds on Hamilton to make the podium. That’s exactly what Hamilton did last week, not to mention placing second at the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix. Look for the seven-time Drivers’ Cup Champion to come through once again, concretizing this two-leg parlay.

Red Bull wins and Lewis Hamilton finishes on the podium (+185 with FanDuel Sportsbook)
