2023 British Formula 1 Grand Prix: Betting Preview

Formula 1 fans are in for a treat this weekend: F1 is headed home for the British Grand Prix. Not only is the 5.89 kilometer Silverstone Circuit among the most historic tracks on the F1 calendar, having hosted grand prix as far back as 1947, the airfield-turned-raceway is blisteringly quick. Further, the British GP is the home race of several F1 teams and drivers, notably Lewis Hamilton and George Russell of Mercedes, and Lando Norris of McLaren, all three of whom will be driving recently upgraded racecars, eager to put on a show. Toss in a generous helping of lengthy straightaways, perilous corners, and raucous fans, and it’s no wonder Silverstone is a favorite among so many F1 diehards.

Dimers.com F1 expert Mac Douglass takes a look at the best bets for the 2023 British Grand Prix.

What’s at stake?

As is likely to remain the case the rest of the year, Max Verstappen’s stranglehold on the Drivers’ Championship is so tight that the Dutchman really doesn’t need to win at Silverstone. But he’ll want to, all the more because, improbably, Red Bull’s back-to-back champion has never won the British Grand Prix before.

Beyond Verstappen, Silverstone projects to deliver highly competitive battles for podium and points finishes. After a bleak outing in Austria, Mercedes will debut a highly-touted set of upgrades, with Toto Wolff going so far as to say that if Merc will win any race this season, none is more likely than the British GP. Meanwhile, Ferrari will be desperate to back up last weekend’s excellent showing, officially turning around their middling 2023. Aston Martin will be rolling out an upgrade package of their own, and McLaren couldwell be a genuine podium contender once again.

British Grand Prix Best Bets

FanDuel Sportsbook allows same-race parlays up to three legs for certain props, including point scorers. With neither Alonso nor Russell having finished out of the top 10 all season, and only two DNFs between them, Norris is the only slight question mark of the three. However, coming off a season-best showing, behind the wheel of a suddenly competitive McLaren, and racing at his home grand prix, Norris inspires all sorts of confidence to make it two points finishes in as many races.

Fernando Alonso, George Russell and Lando Norris core points (-116 with FanDuel Sportsbook)

Not only are Mercedes, and Lewis Hamilton in particular, bona fide Silvertone experts, the German automaker is rolling out their biggest upgrade package of the season this weekend. Toto Wolff is bullish, and bettors should follow suit. As for Carlos Sainz, the Spaniard won the British Grand Prix last year, and his Ferrari looked extremely quick in Austria, securing a sixth place finish that didn’t do justice to Sainz’ pace.

Lewis Hamilton on the podium and Carlos Sainz top six (+190 with FanDuel Sportsbook)

With Verstappen an overwhelming favorite to win his first British Grand Prix, this is more like boosted odds on Piastri to finish in the points. While the Australian was slow last week, it’s only because his racecar hadn’t received the same upgrade package as Piastri’s teammate, Lando Norris, who finished a blistering fourth. In Silverstone, Piastri will at last have access to McLaren’s game-changing upgrades; a points finish looks well within reach.

Max Verstappen wins and Oscar Piastri finishes top ten (+290 with FanDuel Sportsbook)
