Two Week 1 College Football underdogs flagged as market mispricings both hit, so we ran the same model-versus-market analysis on every Week 2 matchup.

Colllege Football Week 2 underdog value bets
Can Florida Atlantic QB Caden Veltkamp take down Navy in Week 2?

Last week we flagged two Week 1 College Football games where the market was charging bettors a premium for a confidence the model didn't share: San Jose State as a road underdog at Eastern Michigan, and Nevada as a road underdog at Western Kentucky. Both had moneylines priced at 57 to 60% for the favorite while Dimers' simulation had each game close to a coin flip.

Both underdogs won outright.

San Jose State beat Eastern Michigan 27-21, rallying from a fourth-quarter deficit on the road. And Nevada didn't just cover, it blew Western Kentucky off the field, winning 49-14 behind a 72-yard touchdown run on the second play of the game.

Neither result was a fluke or a photo finish. The Dimers College Football predictions model saw two games far closer than the market believed, and both broke the way the math leaned.

The setup for Week 2 College Football

We ran the identical process on 83 different Week 2 matchups: compare Dimers' simulated win probability for each favorite against what that favorite's own moneyline implies, and rank the games by the size of the gap. A big gap means the market is charging more confidence than the simulation supports. A gap near zero means the game is efficiently priced and there's nothing to hunt.

Two Week 2 games show a larger gap than either Week 1 play did and feature prominently in our College Football best bets.

Two College Football games to attack in Week 2

North Texas at +155 (vs. UNLV)

When: September 12, 3:45pm (ET)

Where: DATCU Stadium

UNLV is priced at -169 on the moneyline, an implied win probability of 62.8%. Dimers' model has UNLV at 54.7%. That's a 8.1 percentage point gap, the second largest of the week, and it's happening on North Texas' home field. The model's projected final score, UNLV 30, North Texas 28, has this as a two-point game, not a blowout-priced mismatch.

The lean: North Texas is our top target for Week 2.

The market is pricing UNLV like a near-two-thirds favorite in a game the model calls close to a coin flip with a slight lean the other way in score. Take North Texas +155 on the moneyline, or +3.5 on the spread.

Florida Atlantic at +180 (vs. Navy)

When: September 12, 7:30pm (ET)

Where: Flagler Credit Union Stadium

Navy is priced at -194, an implied win probability of 66%. The model has Navy at 57%, a 9-point gap and the largest on the board. The projected score, Navy 31, Florida Atlantic 28, is a three-point game dressed up as a blowout price.

The lean: Florida Atlantic is the second attack of Week 2.

Encouragingly, the gap here is slightly larger than North Texas', and it's happening against a Navy team playing at home, where the market tends to lean even harder on the host.

The secondary CFB value plays in Week 2

Northern Illinois at +145 (vs. Illinois State)

Illinois State is underpriced at -166 as the road favorite, an implied 62.4%. But the model has Illinois State at just 56%, a 6.4 point gap. Smaller than the top two, but real value sits with Northern Illinois getting points at home.

Air Force at +114 (vs. North Dakota State)

North Dakota State is priced at -130, implying 56.5%. The model has it at 52%, a 4.5 point gap, and the projected final score is a flat-out tie, 24-24. That's the second dead-even model projection in two weeks. Air Force getting plus money in a game the simulation can't separate is a legitimate, lower-conviction lean.

Week 2's most efficient College Football matchups

Two games show almost no gap at all, which is its own useful signal.

Mississippi State (-115) at Minnesota (+100)

Mississippi State is priced at -115, implying 53.5%. The model has Mississippi State at 54%. A half-point gap is noise, not value. This one is priced almost exactly right.

UTSA (+101) at Texas State (-118)

Texas State is priced at -118, implying 54.1%. The model also has Texas State at 54%. This is the most efficiently priced game on the entire board, essentially a perfect match between the market and the Dimers prediction.

The betting strategy for Week 2 College Football

Ranked by conviction, based on the size of the gap between the model and the market:

  1. North Texas: take plus money, and/or plus the points vs. UNLV, the biggest gap of the week, on North Texas' home field
  2. Florida Atlantic: take plus money at Navy, nearly as large a gap, against a Navy team favored at home
  3. Northern Illinois: take the points vs. Illinois State, a real but smaller edge
  4. Air Force: take plus money vs. North Dakota State, lower conviction, backed by a model that projects a dead-even tie
  5. Mississippi State at Minnesota, no real edge, efficiently priced
  6. UTSA at Texas State, no edge at all, the most accurately priced game on the board

Last week's two flagged games both hit, one as a straight upset, one as a rout. That doesn't guarantee this week's two best plays land the same way. What it does mean is that the gap between the model and the market is a real, checkable signal, and this week it's pointing hardest at North Texas and Florida Atlantic.

None of this is a guarantee. A 51%-49% model split still means the "underdog" loses to the model's own math 49% of the time, and win probabilities aren't exact outcomes.

What the numbers do say is that if you're going to bet Week 2 college football, the value isn't evenly distributed across these six "close" games. It's concentrated hard in two of them, thin in two more, and essentially nonexistent in the rest.
